Title: Beer recomendations
Post by: Amiduffer on January 03, 2008, 05:41:52 AM
I'm doing a video for YouTube soon featuring Scotish, Irish, and German drinking songs. Yes, I'm going to sing them.

What brands of beer would you recommend that are most identified with those countries and taste good, that would be available here in California? Thanks.  :pint:

No English Ones ? I can make some recommendations there !

actually, for Scots beers you might hunt out a McEwen 80'- (pronounced 80 shilling) or Harviestoun Schiehallion - I had some at my work team's chrissie bash in a pub in Bilston - delicious !

yup! McEwen is nice and tasty and don't forget Guinness Stout (Irish), Bodington (I never liked it - too light), New Castle, Bass Ale........

Will you be properly drunk when you record yourself singing them?

How about the Canadian Maritime provinces? If you ask me that's where the best beer and the best drinking songs come from...

Just listen to the "Night that Paddy Murphy died"... :-D

I've never heard of a Belgian drinking song.

I'll have to sing the german one first because its a Mozart canon and takes some preperation.

I can't imagine that Belgians are NOT signing the prases of thier beers! They have the most in the world, after all....

in any case, i was looking around the web and found this (http://zythophile.wordpress.com/2007/10/29/an-800-year-old-beer-drinking-song/). The oldest beer song - well it's about 800 years old. That might be useful to your project.

My favourite beer.

You might find that McEwan's Export (a standard 'heavy' Scottish beer - featured in 'So I Married An Axe Murderer') is easier to source though.

As far as German beers go, I'd throw my weight behind Becks, primarily because thats the most common German beer you can find downunder. Taste good too :-) As for Irish beer, I'd have to go with Kilkenny :pint:

Thanks Cecilia, that was interesting! I have to limit myself though, 3 will certainly be enough. I barely drink, so 3 will get me plenty :insane:

Thanks Wilse. I'm glad to have everyone here to help with advice.

mmmm... Chimay....

Anyway, German is definately (Paulaner) Salvator, I am having one now and it is probaldy my favourite Bier.  Two pints of these in a Stein will surely get you singing!

Irish is Smithwick's all the way.

If you need an English drinking song, it has to be The Anachreontic Song, the melody of which is also used by aliens from and around Betelgeuse.

NASTY!!!
I just spit my Bier out like someone on a TV sitcom.
A freaking Japanese beetle found it's way into my beer and somehow I could tell what it was with my tongue!

Speaking of bier, is there a German here that can find
out for me if this http://www.kreuzbergbier.de/brauerei/durst.php

can be shipped to my humble abode in Tennessee?

My German isn't good enough to contact them and find out myself.

Many many thanks in advance. That is my favorite beer
in the whole world and I'd really like to enjoy some again.

Good German brands:

Paulaner

Spaten "Optimator"

Franziskaner

Erdinger

Weihenstephaner (World's oldest brewery, btw)

Schneider Weisse (http://www.schneider-weisse.de/)

And my personal favorite of late:

Pinkus Organic (Actually, Pinkus is so damn good, at times I can feel the craving in my bones.. LOL)

Pretty much all of these can be found somewhat easily, except for Schneider-Weisse... which unfortunately has been absent here in Reno for a while.

For Stout, you can't miss Marston's Oyster Stout.

Bass is rubbish, you're probably better off with John Smiths, Sam Smiths or Theakston's XB.
for a really interesting brew, go for Theakston's Old Peculier. fabulous !

One of my favourites is Tim Taylor's Landlord - and not to mention Old Speckled Hen - doesnt travel too well though.

 For my personal taste:

 German

 Paulaner

Schlosser Alt (one "altbier" from Düsseldorf). I love it. Was one of best beer I drink in my whole life.

Erdinger (any type, that's an excellent brand!)

 König Pilsen (marvellous!)

 UK

Guinnes (of course, I love sour beer!):pint:

 Belgium

Chimay (way too expensive to buy here in Brazil, but lovely)

Stella Artois (I consume it very often)
______________________

To complete my alcoholic memory list (not related with the original ask):

 Bohemia (brazilian)

 Bohemia Weiss (diddle)

 Brahma Extra (diddle)

 Antárctica Original (diddle)

 Serramalte (diddle)

Schmidt Barley (special beer from my city)

 Norteña (Argentina)

 Patricia (diddle)

 Miller (USA)

 Budweiser (diddle)

 edited:

I completely forgot about Heineken and Carlsberg! The 600ml version of Heineken is fantastic!

Sorry, I not taste much more beers around the world (just two times in Europe, one in USA). My best over drinkings was in Germany, of course (and at home, very often).

I've got to stick my oar in here.
Scottish beer? as the colloquialism goes 'Get Tae F**k!'
Quite frankly Scottish beer is dismal, its a shame as they do the best whiskey's known to man.
80' is the best of a bad bunch.
English & Belgian Beers are the way forward, with German just a gnats whisker behind.
Ireland only have Guiness, God awful Caffreys 'Cream flow' bitter, and Harp Lager (God help us all). All my family come from NI but I wouldn't drink the beer even if I'd just crawled out of a desert!
Get yourself some decent Porters, or any Adnams brewery Real Ales.
If you don't have to sieve it with your teeth as you drink, it's lemonade.  :-P
As the Pub Landlord quoteth,
'Pint of Beer for the Fella, White wine or Fruit based drink for the lady'

I disagree - Harviestoun Schiehallion is very nice.
you make perfect sense where the whisky is concerned though !

You're all forgetting the mighty Tennents Super. A finer brew there never was. Not dissimilar to Duvel but at a quarter of the price. Alcoholics drink it all the time and those guys must know their beers eh?

Well, if we all liked the same beer, it'd be a boring old world of booze.
I personally find any ale (real or otherwise) served at room temperature vile.
Guinness leaves me cold too.
Having said that, I can appreciate that there is obviously something to be said for both as so many people love them.

I beg to differ.

They know value for money in terms of alcohol content, I'll give you that.

That said, I'd probably class myself as a functioning alky yet I'd rather drink my ain pish than a Purple Tin.

Don't get me wrong, I'm anything but a lager snob but there's a line....

Cheers!

Duvel (or, 'Duivel' in more up to date Dutch) means 'Devil'. And that's a pretty good description for that beer... Tastes good, but damn.....
