Title: OS 4 Classic - Fresh start, dual boot?...
Post by: TheGoose on January 02, 2008, 05:20:24 PM
I read in the release about setting up a dual boot system, one setup for 68k and the other for OS4:

http://www.hyperion-entertainment.biz:8080/news/2007-10-23

Has anyone looked into this? I'm getting ready for a serious Amiga makeover and trying to determine if this is something I want to do. I love old games and SoundStudio tracker, hmmm

I bought a new 160GB to do all this, hmmm. I feel Amiga stupid and challenged, it's been awhile.

I have two 1 gig partitions for 3.9 and 4.0.
OS4 is my default partition.
Just use the boot options in the early startup menu to boot to 3.9.

Don't forget if your 3.0 and above reboots because of blizkick for instance, you will need to use the early startup a second time.

Ok, I guess those two are both ' bootable ' partitions, yes? Another question, in what order do you think I should go at this? I'm thinking:

1. start with os4 install and setup partitions
2. finish up os4
3. come back and install os3.9 on empty bootable partition.

And... (step3) should that be a normal FFS , so 3.9 is happy with it? Cause the new one I assume is not compatible.

Thanks for the help..

Yes, both bootable.
I'm using SFS, which both 3.9 and 4.0 are happy with.
I put the two partitons in the 1st two gig as I had problems when using the 1st 4 gig although that should have been possible.

Probably easier to start of with OS4 1st, as you can boot from the floppy provided and the installation goes ahead quite easily.
The tools for partitoning and formatting are all there.

No problem

One more dumb question. Do you know what the biggest partition OS3.9 can use, to boot from? Something tells me it isn't 4GB...

Must be something like 2GB?

I believe that *all* of your boot partitions must be within the first 4GB of the hard drive. I would suggest that you copy TiredOfLife and have 1GB for OS4 and 1GB for OS3.9 :pint:

Thanks. This is so much fun now. Hmm, life as a technical writer in the Amiga universe; what do they get paid?

I have three boot partitions within the first 4GB of the hd:

1 OS3.9
2 MorphOS
3 OS4

OS3.9 has the highest priority. So you don't have to go twice into early startup.

For MorphOS you can edit startup-sequence and set bootdevice="bootdevice=DH1". You have to choose the partition only once in early startup.

For OS4 you can uncomment the entry in kickstart/kicklayout "kickstart/BootDevice". Afterwards type in a shell "echo > kickstart/BootDevice "DH2". You have to choose the partition only once in early startup.

Just another way to do it.

"OS3.9 has the highest priority. So you don't have to go twice into early startup."

That maybe a better plan, argh not again. But I have come to another question about 3.9. What happens when I create my emergency 3.9 boot disk from having booted up in OS4?  :nervous:

Does it not copy stuff from your current system to the disk, along with some bits from the 3.9 CD? If that's true then my 3.9 boot up disk could be giving me troubles I think.

Seems like I need to have a boot disk that was generated from a clean 68k type system, because afterwards, my install is just haywire, crashes whenever I move / resize a window.

Perhaps. I've never needed a boot floppy as I have 3 HDs, and at least 5 bootable partitions on them. Now I had to ditch one Work backup partition to install 4.0 on it. So now I have clean 3.1, clean 3.9, 2x tweaked 3.9 either CGX or P96, 4.0 and then MAC 7.6.1, 9.1 and even partition for PC-Task (win95...well...).

About setting up 3.9 - my ideas/fears were right. You need to either have some other HD or use original 3.1 floppy set to get going the right way.

I got a set from spihunter and it is fine, stable now.

Good! Glad the floppies still worked.

Well I've found it and will be able to uncomment ';MODULE Kickstart/BootDevice' of the file OS4:Kickstart/KickLayout-A4000

But could you just clarify that last part please? Do you mean to add a new line beneath which contains the echo command? (I don't understand how typing an echo command in shell would have an affect on the next warm reset)
