Title: HDD HELP NEEDED PLS!
Post by: mrmig600 on December 27, 2007, 11:07:00 PM
Hi,i am having a few problems installing Workbench 3.1 and setting my hdd up via UAE and wondered if anyone here had any ideas....

anyhow i have my intended A600 30GB HDD in a USB caddy with the intention of formatting it and installing workbench 3.1 from ADF[as it would be quicker. I have managed to get the emulator along with the WB3.1 installer disk to detect the HDD in my USB caddy under SCSI[it will only detect as that]. I have attempted in HD toolbox to low level format and partition the drive and flag it as bootable ready for the OS installation but the it refuses to accept that the empty drive is actually empty and i cannot go any further with the installation. If anyone can help me with the problem i would be very grateful as i have been racking my brains over this for a while.

Oh and i dont know if this makes any difference but i have been following some instructions from http://valwit.net/uaehde.html.

Help.... Please! lol I Wanna Get Some Tracking Done!!

Thanks In Anticipation! :-?  :-?

The problem is that Amiga OS 3.x can only work with drives upto 4GB (2^32), the instructions were for a 813MB drive.
Otherwise it will think your 30GB HD is actually something else.

You need a more up to date file system, such as WB 3.9's FFS or something like SFS so it can recognise bigger hard disks!

Also, uaehf.device is for Hard Files not hard disks! Please remove or change it to scsi.device or whatever instead.

A file system alone does not help much. You need both, an updated file system and an updated IDE driver.

uaehf.device is used for both, real and virtual hard drives. scsi.device does not work.

I didn't know that. You are correct, you do need an uptodate scsi.device as well. Such as the FFSTD64 extension from Aminet (disk/misc/ffstd64.lha)

ffstd64 is a crappy patch for FFS V40, it does not solve anything and it does not allow to use more than 4GB without an additional IDE driver, either.

The patches you need are here: http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=37

And additionally you might need these:
http://www.aminet.net/util/boot/LoadModule.lha
http://www.aminet.net/util/sys/patchstrip.lha
http://www.aminet.net/disk/misc/FFS43.19_patch.lha

Detailed instructions in German are here: http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/bighdd/
