Title: External keyboard a1200
Post by: Flowman on December 25, 2007, 06:47:50 PM
Anyone got a good tutorial how to connect a a4000 external keyboard to a a1200? I been checking out aminet but didn't find anything useful. Or if there is any keyboard adapter for a4000 keyboard.

Since the A1200's keyboard controller (68HC05) lives on the motherboard, you'd have to cut some traces to disconnect it and reconnect the traces to the external connector.

Soo difficult. The wires on the CIA are DAT and CLK. DAT on the left as looking at the picture.

Take +5V and GND anywhere you like, the board is riddled with suitable spots. If you are unsure, tap the floppy connector.

If your hookup produces a stream of ''''''s when you type, CLK and DAT are swapped. Switch the wires around to rectify.

The internal controller does not necessarily have to be disabled, unless it is malfuntioning. Try it first without disabling it, nothing will break.

You might want to make a kbd reset circuit too. Check Aminet docs/hard.

Get a EZKEY or Lyra adapter they are the best ones allow most key presses etc,.,.

Does the EZKEY support amiga-keyboards? Or is it only pc-keyboards.
I need something that supports a4000 keyboard and multiple key press.

I like that soldering thing :D it looked kinda cool.

Amiga keyboards don't really need their signals adapted, as they connect directly to the CIA, like in my modification above.

I happened to use an A500 keyboard, so I got the keyboard reset for "free" right off the A500's keyboard controller board.

An Amiga keyboard will always support multiple keypresses, unless it's using the A1200's onboard controller. :-)

No idea about EZ-Key, I'm afraid.

It is fairly easy to connect an A4000 kbd to the 1200.

Easiest way is to make connections on the underside of the motherboard, plus 2 small trace cuts are required.
Considerably easier than trying to solder to the PLCC pins of the keyboard controller  :-o

Check out:

Text is Spanish only, but the pics are quite easy to follow.

Done it to several machines here, no probs.
