Well i need a 030@ preferably 40/50mhz so i can do simple web browsing on my A1200 and play same good games.
As im 13 i dont have allot of cash on me but I have £35 if anyone has a accelerator to part with.
EDIT: What type of accelerator could i get for £35?

A broken one ;-)
I dont think your going to have alot of luck with this request, as it seems your going to have to dig abit deeper in ye olde pockets :-(
The Amiga is an expensive hobby and ebay has'nt done the community any favors! But theres nothing to be done about this as theres people willing to pay daft money for somethings and this is more of an attraction for sellers rather than a fixed price. A little tip about placing a wanted advert don't disclose how much money you have as this will put of some people. Find out what prices people want for the item, then try and find the extra amount if its not much more! ask your parents, sister, brother and even the local priest for a small loan.
But you never know someone somewhere might be willing to let there card go cheaper for someone who really wants one :-?
theres also the option of going for a 020 card, these normally come with 4mb of ram and are available in your price range. :-)
-
Oh ok thanx!
I only want a card for my A1200 to improve its performance and so i can download files from Aminet.
What would you lot recommend for doing that? Would a 4MB RAM card be ok for the job?
-
This one (http://cgi.ebay.nl/BLIZZARD-1230-II-Turboboard-A1200-50MHz-32-MB-RAM_W0QQitemZ200184181923QQihZ010QQcategoryZ8142QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) could go rather cheap. But then again not anymore now that I posted the link ;-). 030 cards go for reasonable prices on eBay IMHO.
To download on Amiga you don't need an accelerator but a network card obviously. If you only want to tranfer files from PC to Amiga maybe a PCMCIA cardreader would be easier.
-
This sort of thing (http://amigahardware.mariomisic.de/cgi-bin/showhardware_en.cgi?HARDID=944) might be more in line with your budget, atm. I've got one I'll let you have for £35, or a bit less if the community insists, but we might have to run a worthwhile poll on that. ;-) It was sodding expensive when it was new. Or keep saving for a while, and once you can throw £50-100 at it you should be able to get something quite nice.

Does your card have the FPU? If so what speed is it?
-
So if i got a 4MB RAM card and a network card and software would my A1200 be ok for downloading/browsing Aminet?
-

Yes, it looks very much like the top one of those illustrated.
It has the FPU, 68882 @ 33 MHz.
It originally had 4MB FPM RAM, iirc, with gold connector pads - I still have it and will include it. It currently has 8MB EDO RAM fitted - it has been that way for years. Again iirc, it accepts 1/2/4/8 MB, option being set by the jumpers.
It does not have a battery in the holder - but I could probably rustle one up. The clock works fine as long as the machine has power - the battery just means it doesn't forget the time when you switch the A1200 off.
If you use more than 4MB then you will find conflicts with the PCMCIA slot, due to 24bit address range using the first 4MB for the PCMCIA interface. I have no PCMCIA devices.

Dear Friend:
I have a nice 030/50mhz+fpu which I use on my amiga 1200, especially for rendering 3d graphics/animation with aladdin 4d.First, i bought this accelerator on ebay for us$ 120 and it was working fine. then I bought the fpu for like us$ 40 (I forgot from whom) and then I bought a 16 mb ram stick from software hut for us$ 70. So now I have a nice setup, an 030/50 mhz+fpu+16mb ram. It runs good and is good enough for my graphics needs.A word of advice: Since I installed the accelerator...many classic amiga games quit working, I guess the accel card is not backward compatible, ex. many games won't work anymore. But that is not a problem, because my main use of amiga is for 3d..and the accel is super for that, to accelerate my render time.
I told you how much I paid, so you have an idea. If you still want an accelerator, save your money and build it little by little like I did.
Cheers!!!

So if it conflicts with the PCMCIA would i just be better off getting the 4MB RAM card for £10.
What does the FPU do? Take weight of the 68E020? So the 68E020 will be used for math stuff or something?
If i waited until Xmas day when i should hopefully have more money to get a PCMCIA network card and Accelerator?
Or if it conflicts with the PCMCIA port cant i use that software that stops the PCMCIA card reader reseting?

Dear Friend:
A suggestion: If you get amos professional for amiga, you could easily learn how to make your own amiga games. Is free...and you can join the amos community at:
http://amos.condor.serverpro3.com/index.php
In there you can get help to learn how to make your own amiga games.-also free-.
This is my amos page where you can Download my 2 amos/amiga games:
www.feryogi.com/amos.html
be sure to get amos...then you can learn to make amiga games to enrich the amiga community.
Cheers!!!

The FPU lets you run Maths functions in hardware... If you need sine and cosine and e^x and logarithms etc., etc. It doesn't half ease the load on the 'main' processor.
N.B. most games just do approximate maths using integer operations - which are usually fast but inaccurate. The FPU won't help there, but it will still 'lift' any generic maths routines away from the 68020 (it automatically ties itself into the system through microcode) so it does maths while the processor carries on with program logic. And it is clocked faster too.
The 'simple' ram boards - like this one - often cause fewer conflicts with games. With 4MB fitted, you should be able to run nearly any classic era game.
If you don't want/need the FPU, then get the cheaper board as it is unlikely that you will also need the extra 4MB of ram.

I have AMOS on a cover disk but i have no idea how to use it?
Is it like this?:
100 PROC Hello
110 PRINT "HELLO"
120 END PROC
130 DEF PROC Hello
140 END

Friend:
Join the amos community -free- and everyone will help you learn how to program in AMOS.
http://amos.condor.serverpro3.com/index.php
more advice: If you check 'aminet' there is a dev/amos subfolder which is loaded with amos small programs (all free) you can download to see how the programs is coded and what they do, all in amos.
If you can find it, get the amazing book 'amiga game maker's manual-with amos basic'by stephen hill. Is not expensive (you just have to find it)and is great help, it teaches how to program any kind of games in amos basic.
Ex. It teaches how to program arcade, adventure, roleplaying, simulation, etc etc.
The amos community will help you!!!
cheers!!!

So if i got a Amiga A4000/040@25mhz and got a network card and got some RAM for it. Would that be a good enough machine for simple web browsing?
-
Sure but you won't find that for 35 GBP.
Seriously for browsing and other stuff you do in Workbench Winuae is nearly perfect. Use that and do some classic gaming on your 1200. With a harddisk and that 4Mb card you can install a lot of games using WHDLoad. Transfer files using a cheap PCMCIA network card or card reader.
Costs:
Winuae: free
4Mb card: 10 GBP?
PCMCIA lan: 10 GBP (second hand)?
PCMCIA card reader: 15 GBP Amigakit
All other options will cost very much. A second hand 4000 can already cost more than 150 GBP and then you don't have a cheap network option.

The A1200 can be expanded far easyier. It will cost afew quid to upgrade your machine. but even when you finally get it all upgraded it still can't do alot of things a PC can do as standard. I'm not to sure on requirements to run an amiga online as I have a PC for that sort of stuff as it does'nt limit what kind of site I can view. but i'm guessing anything less than a 060 is'nt going to be much fun atall.
one of the other guys will give you some advice on requirements.

Awwww....
If I still had my '030 from my old 1200, I'd give it to you, for such an adorable post!!! :-P
Happy Holidays, Gwion. I hope that Santa brings you something good this year, Kid.
-
I know he's bringing me a A600 with 2MB RAM and a 80MB Harddrive :D
I really cant wait to open it :D
-
I'd like Santa to bring me another A3000, to replace the one my ex-girlfriend tossed off our balcony....
"You love this computer more than me!!"
"So? She doesn't talk back!"
Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.

I feel you there. Santa's bringing me a new A500 to play with, the day after X-Mas. A guy was kind enough to drive it up here from California, so I could have a good Christmas. :-P
