Title: VisualPrefs skins in AfA_OS 4
Post by: motorollin on December 22, 2007, 10:41:38 AM
Hi all

Just upgraded AfA_OS on my A4000 to the latest version 4.0, which is supposed to support VisualPrefs themes. So I disabled VisualPrefs and rebooted. I then loaded AfA_prefs and tried to select a skin, but when I navigated to the drawer containing the VisualPrefs theme, all I could see was folders, not the VP theme file itself. Can anyone help?

AfA-OS v4.0 uses it's own skinning format, completely different to the VisualPrefs format.

Indeed, this format is different to the AmigaOS4.0 format, the MorphOS format, and somewhat bizarely, even the AROS skinning format.

I played with the AROS skins briefly, however experienced some stability issues that I have not had a chance to investigate further.

Basically, I simply commented VisualPrefs and other UI hacks/patches out of the startup-sequence, then selected the theme from the (absolutely awful wizard.library GUI) AFA prefs program.  I believe they are stored in Prefs/Presets/Skins.

AfA-OS is a terrific way of breathing new life into 68k classic systems, however there would appear to be a considerable amount of trial and error involved in getting everything working correctly, partly due to the lack of documentation.

That being said, it is arguably the best thing to have happened to 68k classic AmigaOS in years, and I personally look forward to seeing just how much of AROS can be back-ported!

Cheers,
James

Thanks James. According to this news item about AFA-OS 4 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47198) you can switch between VisualPrefs, Birdie or AfA skin systems using the GUI. I interpreted that to mean that you could use VisualPrefs themes within AfA, but perhaps I misunderstood.

I will try with an AfA theme and see if that will apply, and if it does then I'll work on converting my custom VP theme to AfA format.

OK I tested with one of the included AfA skins and that didn't work either. When browsing for the skin I went in to the directory containing the skin and it added that as the path to the skin, but the "test window" didn't change (still showed default AmigaOS gadgets). Any ideas?

Did you save the settings and try resetting? In my experience the skin system does not always apply straight away.

Failing that, ensure that the new intuition and icon libraries are loading correctly by checking the resident version numbers using Scout etc.

Good luck,
James

Ahhh yes, saving the settings and rebooting did the trick - thanks James! Don't know why I didn't try that in the first place. Now, to get started converting my VisualPrefs theme to an AfA one!

Okay, please let me know how you get on.

I may decided to do something similar with my OS4 theme, as there are a number of subtle differences to Ken's version.

Cheers,

I've got AfA_OS 4.7 installed on a 3.1 partition that I'm configuring in UAE before I copy it to my A3000.

I can't even select a skin using AfA_Prefs as the text field and the selection button are greyed out.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

See attached screen grab for details.

Thanks. :)
