Title: Elbox news?
Post by: Pyromania on December 21, 2007, 11:02:37 PM
Now that Amiga OS 4.0 Classic version has been out for almost a month has anyone heard anything from Elbox? It would be good if they had some solutions for Amiga OS 4.0 and they could make nice $$$ for themselves.

Yeah....now that we know Duke Nukem Forever is on the way, we'll have to change the tag-line to: "Which will come first, SharkPPC or OS5?"

*laughing hysterically*

Psss! dont tell anyone this, as its highly confidential The 'E' people are madly redesigning this secret card for a joint release with OS5 on Xmas day, its true I tell you! If all this sounds a bit fishy "please excuse the pun" my confidant who is allways reliable and wears a red suit with white trimmings told me they are working 24 hours a day somewhere up in Greenland, in order to keep us all happy.

[EDIT] - By the way, you're not the one who started the thread, not to mention unless you work for Elbox and are said "designer" of their re-badged Sonnet cards, who gives a sh!t if you're "not amused"? Try being an adult.

And jokes generally lose some comedic value once they have to be explained.

But it makes me think: I understand that there are a number of cultures which lack a concept of sarcasm (probably a good thing.)  This is especially exhibited in its language as changing inflections actually change the meanings of a word.  Anyone on AO from one of these cultures or countries?

jokes are even unfunnier if they aren't understood. or kept as in joke. is this an official statement from the company then? i'd like to read it! otherwise it sounds like trolling.

@monami

http://buy.elbox.com/cgibin/shop?info=350S1G

"Availability: Q1 2007"
"*) Production of SharkPPC cards will start as soon as the final version of AmigaOS4.0 for A1 is released."

"Production" means swapping the heatsink of Sonnet Crescendo 7200 (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/crescendo_7200.html), in this case. Probably also reflashing the boards to make sure users can't use original Crescendo boards, and are forced to pay elbox premium.

Last Dragon update is from November 2006 when they were supposed to go for sale. They were supposed to go for sale January 2005, too, and every update since then, pretty much.

Isn't it even slightly funny that both products are still MIA?

You want the official word, then go to the real website, copy and paste their words to a post and include a citation.

Otherwise what you read on the Internet is just conjecture, or trolling.  ESPECIALLY around here :-P

If Amiga users can't by now get a good laugh from broken promises then we are in serious trouble.

i take your point. but what happens if they do come up with product?

I am entirely sure at this point if anyone did get a response from them it would be along the lines of "Well, we're waiting for the legal issues to sort themselves out" which, as we all know, won't happen soon if at all (AInc sues Hyperion, Friedens sue Hyperion to get ExecSG so even if AInc wins, they still have to fight the Friedens to GET the OS).

If it did or does, I'm also entirely sure they simply won't release it, period.

Also, someone mentioning these being rebaged sonnet boards?  Yeah.  I can see El "Delete your RDB" Box pulling that crap.

I'll cry for joy. Then I'll cry for lack of cash.......then I'll become a drug dealer to make the cash and buy the damn products at last only to end up inside with a 16 stone..... OMG....perish the thought, see what trouble actually releasing a product for Amiga could do? best we all just keep talking about it instead.

Now if they were smart, they'd make the 'cooler' cover up the whole board and say "WARNING DO NOT REMOVE COOLER.. EVER!"
Title: Re: What we have here is a failure to communicate...

then why hasn't someone put one in their mediator then?

Because it would just be an expensive space heater.

Because unlike what Elbox wants everyone to believe it doesn't magically run unmodified OS4.

what does that mean exactly?
Title: Re: What we have here is a failure to communicate...
Post by: Zac67 on December 22, 2007, 08:48:39 PM
Well,

Sonnet Crescendo 7200 (G3/500): $39.95
Elbox SharkPPC: $452.95
getting ripped off by Elbox: invaluable
Title: Re: What we have here is a failure to communicate...

why don't you install one then?
Title: Re: What we have here is a failure to communicate...

There is no software to make OS4 run on it. You'd have to program it/hack OS4 yourself.
Title: Re: What we have here is a failure to communicate...
Post by: monami on December 22, 2007, 09:21:15 PM
ahhh! exactly. so i see these lol elbox comments everywhere... yet they provide drivers/ bios/ investment in buying a whole bunch of boards as well as negotiating with the company. and then support.

also when their prices went up on the net i suspect they would have cost a small fortune. i wanted one of these for my mac and they were hundreds of pounds. yes they may be £20 now. but not when the prices where originally quoted. i assume a price would be reasonably dropped to match. :-)

It's not that Elbox rebrands and upsells commodity hardware--that's just good capitalism (*cough* profiteering *cough*). The problem is that representatives of Elbox use words like "revenge" and that Elbox's software is just as likely (perhaps more so) to whack your file system as it is to function as advertised.

Because it cannot work in an unmodified Mediator *ever* as it's missing the required 3,3 V traces. It cannot work for other reasons, at least not if it wants to have access the the motherboard hardware. mboehmer could elaborate on this, and I'm sure you will find some information about it somewhere.

Post by: Zac67 on December 23, 2007, 10:31:43 AM
Well, they'd just have to replace the Mediator bridgeboard with a DMA capable one.

BTW, I wonder if PCI-to-Zorro3 DMA is technically possible at all - nobody seems to be able to do it.

So even if the card is just a rebadged sonnet card, everyone here admits that they have to do a lot of software work to get ppc hal for powerup/warpup and os4, and also redesign part of their own amiga spesific hardware...

Okay a $400 add on might be stiff, but then again how much have they invested and how much can they anticipate to sell?

And finnally theres the question of offer and demand, resently ppc cards have traded for $800 and €800 on ebay, if these Elbox cards came with a ppc.library that is 100% or even just 97% compatible with running ppc software with 3.1 and a phase5/DCE card I'd gladly fork over $400 for a brand new card with two years waranty.

Then finally to the allegations that their software drivers erases harddrives. I've read the webpage that dissassembled the driver, and I've read Elbox reply on their page. I don't know what to think about that, but I do think that they won't be doing that again or are doing that anymore...

Now, merry christmas everyone and lets hope that the SAM or EFIKA gets OS4 enabled.

More evidence to support my theory re: the codependent relationship between Amiga users and their Amigas. ;-) We'll all need to stock up on foundation to cover up the bruises Elbox will cause with their next major hardware release.
