Title: New Hardware, Software and News in 2008?
Post by: sdyates on December 16, 2007, 04:43:02 AM
What are your predictions for new Hardware, Software and News ahead in 2008?
Title: Re: New Hardware, Software and News in 2008?

-More promises and bull from Ainc but no product.

-Updates of actual software from the developpers who are still active.

-More ports and new stuff for OS4.0

-an AGA minimig?? (would love that)

News?.... same stuff as last year but faster, more expensive and almost as useless ;)   (PC and console scenes that is)

I'll be a little more realistic ;) How about a retail version of minimig OCS?

Something that will use flash drives for content :)

- Deneb Highspeed USB 2.0 Zorro II/III DMA with Poseidon 4.0
- MorphOS 2.0
- Some nice (Amiga Classic) hardware by Individual Computers
- IBrowse 3
- Elbox finally officially quitting and admitting that the Dragon and the Shark were bad jokes ;-)
- The scam/con bunch at the various Amiga Inc's finally going into jail (hopefully) for a very long time.

On the Hardware side I think Clone-A will be the most interesting.

Maybe we will see a new OS4 Hardware but I dont have much hope for that.

On the Software side, I think AROS will become a lot more interesting:

-AROS being able to execute 68k code

-AROS with a decent Web Browser

...

And maybe MorphOS 2.0 ?

Yeah..

Software side:
MorphOS 2
CSS capable browser
Some nice new 3D games
OS4 updates to bring A1 and classic version to the same point
New SDK for OS4 (Hopefully!)

Hardware side:
Efika 2
Maybe Pegasos 3
Deneb USB

@Heinz
I agree with all of your predictions.

I would add to the predictions a big increase in Minimig owners, especially as we have a couple of viable solutions now (v1.1, DE1/DE2). I also hope to see more Minimorph developments.

I predict the most exciting development in '08 will be the release of Clone-A (I hope!!!).

Don't forget the hardware (http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=46) portion either.

- IBrowse 3.0 Os4 native only. :)
- New AmiPhoto version and other products from Alinea Computer
- I hope Sam440 with AmigaOS 4
- I hope many ppc games for AmigaOS 4

Don't get your hopes up. Currently, even more games are being developed for the Atari 2600 than for OS4. I find that rather telling. So don't expect too much apart from a few crappy SDL-ports.

I think the Hyperion games will ported to os4, maybe we can see games from Epic or another firms. :-)

I don't think so. With both "core OS4 developers" now suing Hyperion, how likely is it that they will be contracted to port the 8-year-old games to OS4 in order to sell some whopping 83 copies?

Not only the core developer port the games from hyperion. I think Steffen will do a good work. :)
I think we neeed some games to see the power of the old PPC machines.  :-D

@ Heinz, I'd have to say that your bet is the most realistic and also the most exciting. I certainly expect something from Individual computers this coming year... Clone A :)

Serious question: How will Deneb support work? Based on your actions, the general public viewpoint is that Poseidon is dead. Will E3B be providing support for the stack? (I'm asking with respect to E3B, the Deneb, and the Poseidon stack and not with respect to your personal relationships with Michael or anyone else in the Amiga community. Although, if for some reason you and Michael have a falling out, it does leave your customers without support and in many jurisdictions would expose E3B to quite a bit of legal risk.) That said, I suppose I should be posing this question to E3B directly.

First comes the Efika2 and MOS2.0 an then comes a nice, small media
device/picture frame made of it.

I hope this deneb card get's released with the poseidon stack with it.
I would be very willing to pay once again for this great software to go with the card.
I also am hoping on morphos 2.
And off course in the back off the head SAM still would come out soon.

Pegasos 8641D (http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/8641d/specifications)

I almost wish the Amiga would die so that it could come back as a retro platform.

As soon as I think about Amiga, I go into whats the latest...get into a dizzying array of lawsuits, whats coming real soon now, and etc....and decide to wait.

Atari is dead, but look at the prices for the Atari 1040ST's skyrocketing....  they old hardware is rare, at the same time people are having fun with the 'retro' craze.

Amiga's....well, they have some value too, but who wants to get sucked into it all...

Really I may have just said I wished the Amiga was dead...thats the 2nd choice, the first choice would be for everything to get straightened out...if wishing, might as well wish for that....but its all just going to keep going as it is...

thats my prediction for 2008:  see 2007.

I've love to see a tiny expansion for CD32

Onboard 8MB RAM, memory card reader (SD or/and CF) and ethernet. Or maybe just RAM, some flash and clockport for subway, and then usb card reader and usb-ethernet adaptert. Flash for usb stack and device drivers ofcourse :-)

Software:

1 - A Nice Browser ! Traveller for classic Amiga maybe... Anything that can surf the web in a nice fashion
2 - Some visual language. Name it: Basic, C, Pascal, Amos, E... whatever. As long as it has something as simple as VB to design windows and gadgets and all MUI stuff...

Hardware:

1 - A new Amiga !  :-?  Ain't it funny ? We are having fun using machines that are probably slower and have less resources than any DVD player and it seems that we are the only people in the world that thinks building an Amiga compatible is something useful. There are nice stuff selling a lot, like Ataris and C64s in a joystick, MSX in a chip, Speccy in a phone... Maybe someone could try an Amiga in a refrigerator or something  :-D I really doubt AInc would think about not selling Kickstart chips to mass production.
Why can't AmigaOS replace WinCE (at least in part) in embbedded stuff ? WinCE is huge and requires lots of hardware compared to AOS. I've seen quite a number of applications that have either CE or uCLinux that would benefit a lof from a lightweight preemptive system like AOS. It seems very competitive to me
    2 - Wait and see...  :-)

This is off-topic, so if you want to discuss this further, please either use PM or open another thread. Short answer: Yes, I am still providing support for Poseidon and will do as long as possible.

It's funny to see people take a "make a prediction" post and turn it into a wishlist. Doesn't anyone read anymore?

Anyhow, my set of *predictions* (do not take'em seriously, heh):

Hardware:
Deneb like Chris said (he must know best, right? :-) can we like pre-order?)
Some newer mutation(s) of MiniMig
New batch of Apollo 1260s (hint hint)
Clone-A

Software:
AROS improved x 2
AROS browser Traveller
AmigaOS4 for non-classic platform
AmigaOS4 for the PS3 CELL processor

OK, that last one was to pull yer leg, ya gullable suckerz :-D

So my software predictions:

1. More IP stack choices.
2. A port of an up-to-date JVM.
3. VGA/SVGA/VESA display driver for Picasso 96 (if I can sort out a hardware-independent way to access VGA memory during ROM initialization under x86 emulation and afterwards--without signing NDAs).

OK, so those are my personal projects, so maybe they don't count as predictions....

Not by any chance playing with an IPv6 capable stack are you? :-)

uIP and lwIP (the two stacks I'm using) both support IPv6. I don't have IPv6 up on my home network, but once I get IPv4 going properly, I'll look at IPv6.

From an addressing point of view, I'm more inerested in IPv4 autoconf for interoperability with systems and devices that support autoconf and multicast DNS.

Check the uIP thread here on Amiga.org for the latest updates on both stacks.
