I've seen afew off these amigas floating about and I thought it would be about time I made my own version. so since christmas is sneaking up on us again which means royal mail will be screwing everything up. I'm asking for you guys and gals help on compiling a list of needed parts? just so they should all arrived together:
Goal of system:
Amiga 1200 desktop with internal cd and 2.5 hdd
-
Ive got an internal CD drive on my A1200D and i have to admit its so useful having one!
And its so easy and cheap to do the hack aswell i just picked up a compaq laptop cd drive off ebay (less than £5) and hacked a hole in the side of my case and it all fits togather nice and snug!
Im also using one of those buffered ide adaptor/ interface things from amigakit and i supose u also need a copy of ide fix.
The HDD in mine is the normal 2.5" but because the cd drive is in there the was no way for me to mount it on to anything really so its pretty much loose inside and just rapped in anti static bubble wrap to stop it banging about and stop it from coming in contact with the mother board ..
mines a pretty sh*t hack but it does the job .. ive also got gaffa tape holding the cd drive in but u might want to do things a bit more pro than me

thank you SamOS39. Did you have to change the psu or is the standard 1200 psu fine?
afew more questions I thought off:
If you can use the standard power supply how is the cd powered?
I'm guessing even with a slim line drive you can't cut the cradle to slip under the drive?
is there any need to add afew small fans into the case?
-
did you find a cable or buy a cd to ide adapter?
-
lol so many questions ..
The standard A1200 PSU works fine and i never though of it before
I haven't added any fans and i don't see any need but i suppose it depends on what accelerator you are using and stuff like that. I only have an 8mb upgrade card but i only really use my miggy to make music and as a midi sequencer.
I use it for hours and ive never had any problems with it overheating.
For the power wires i actually made that myself (DIY) and it plugs straight into the FDD power.
But im sure you can get something from Maplin ..?
:-)

I've been thinking about adding one to my A3000D for ages. It could easily be fitted by cutting a slot above the floppy drives and (bodge job suggestion #1) using blu-tac or similar to stick it to the top of the floppies.
It's just a case of finding an adapter to change the laptop IDE connector on the CD into a standard internal desktop IDE connector with power port.
-
I have about a dozen laptop cd's. I wrote amigakit to ask about a cable to adapt them to IDE 40pin. They said they would check into it.
-
I made a "support" stand for the CD-Rom out of an L shaped aluminium thingie, and also reseated the HDD. Be aware that you do not only get a slim CD drive, but also a connector that gives you a 3,5 IDE, and Floppy power connector for it. Just use any (long enough) Y Floppy Power Kable to power your CD-Rom from the Floppy power connector.
Maybe have a look at my signature for some ideas how to do/place things. (Sorry it's all german, but the photos should be "readable" for everyone.
Have fun while building it :-D
-
Oh yes i forgot about that.
When i bought the laptop drive i found out that it came out of a mini ITX case so it was already fitted with the adapter.
They're cheap and easy to get on ebay

This kind of connector? (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/new-slim-Laptop-CD-DVD-Drive-to-IDE-Adapter-mini-ITX_W0QQitemZ140190653893QQihZ004QQcategoryZ41994QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
@Donar
Thats a nice machine you have there and thank you for the link (couldnt find a bowing smiley so heres a :-D instead
EDIT:
Thank you SamOS39 for the links:-)
-
@Donar
That is the nicest A1200 ive ever seen :-o
-
Yes that one should work fine!
Have you got a buffered ide interface?
If not then i recomend the one im using

-
Yea i've got afew of them lying about somewhere, but to save time I'll order a new one :-)
-
I did this hack and it worked out fine.
I made an aluminium bracket to mount the 2.5 harddisk on.
I put the cdrom on the leftside off the amiga1200.
I also had to add an extra powerplug for the cdrom for reliability reasons.
I am also using an AT psu to power it.
Maybe because it also has a blizzard 030 and an internal FF inside which pulls too many amps out off the psu.
picture is here:
http://romeo.messageboard.nl/8931/album_pic.php?pic_id=20
I also mounted an delfina clockport soundcard but couldn't get it to work properly.
But maybe a subway will still fit there??
Ooh I also tried the CF cardtrick for the harddisk but that wouldn't work with the cdrom.

I was just about to say, if you are using internal CD HD with an accelerator a Goliath PSU might be a good investment
-
i did this hack with a teac slim cd, bought the mini ide adapter and fitted the cd comin out of the back left of the a1200.
i ran this and an apollo 1230 on a a500 heavy brick supply with no problems at all.
since gone back to a complete 1200 and a squirrel scsi with external drives.
-
This was something I planned on doing with an A500, if I could find an internal IDE controller.
I miss my A500.
Woo Hoo for my *FREE* one that's coming up here, the day after X-Mas. XD

I asked them once in a forum if they had something suitable and they never replied. I guess they don't like me.
Seriously though, if they manage to sell you somekits or have something in stock and you end up eBaying some of those drives then please let us know.

ok managed to pick up a abused A1200 for £20 of ebay and afew of the other parts I need. I was trying to locate a 030 or 040, but not alot happening there. So the only spare card I have lying about is a 060/160mhz BPPC. I know its not recommended to fit one of these cards into a desktop amiga but at this point in time i have no option as a standard 1200 just doesnt do it for me :)
PSU is'nt a problem as I binned afew of those crappy plastic infinitive towers but kept all the connectors :)
So whats the recommended options for installing a bppc into a desktop 1200?
-
@Darrin
Sorry I didnt see your post- you can use our contact form ( http://contact.amigakit.com ) or pmail here
-
@ SamOS39
You and I have the same tower, only yours is cleaner lol
Although I was toying with decorating one of the sides with a massive custom printed boing ball sticker or maybe even an AmiZilla one
Must investigate those options again after xmas :-)
-
Look at this hack (http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=2014=10): the guy managed to install a BVision inside the original desktop case.
It's not hard at all. The only concern is cooling the system. Lots of fans and heatsinks.
-
thank you rkauer, But im not wanting to go that far. The bppc is only a temp thing until i get a 030/040 be after xmas now :(
but i'll add in afew more fans until then :)
-
If you buy a 040 then you have to live with stirring fans, anyways...

@Nasty
Hi the the components needed is:
Slimline cd rom "in my case TEAC 224"
Laptop IDE converter
Cable after your need Leamans computing will make one for you..
As for slimlinedrives i have a few for free At Amibay.co.uk "price of postage,,,,," :-D
Dont know if it is of any interst but i may have a blizzard 1220 4 mb acc board for a cheap sum... It has twice the clock speed of the 1200 and fast ram ...
-
thanks adonay sending you a PM
-
Great thread, great timing, as it is gonna be a christmas holiday project for me as well!
@Adonay: I sure wouldn't mind getting one from you either: PM send.
-
i'm interested in this hack. i think a tower is too big to be usable sometimes.
1. i would be using a apollo 40 32mb ram, hd either a 3gb or 20gb and the slim cd rom, cocolino, pcmcia network card. and buffered interface if needed. would i be ok with an a500 powerbrick?
2. can someone point to a slim cd on ebay that would work? does it matter about make? would an ibm t21 drive be ok. as i have a spare one.
-
i ended up buying a DVD/CDRW slot loader off of mini-itx.com they've got a good range, plus the right adapters.
as i run a BPPC in my A1200 desktop, i bought a NanoATX PSU from them as well, plus a D-box ATX to AT adapter, snipped the AT cables to goto the power socket, and clipped the drive leads to goto three floppy plugs, one for extra power to the mainboard, one for the DVD, and one for the floppy. so its all inside the case.
one day i may even put the lid back on!
i just need some good ideas for PPC cooling...

Just a tip: a friend of mine just put the CD as master and the CF as slave and it is running like a charm!
-
what kind of internal power cable did you use?
-
Right nearly after a year of planning to do this mod, I've finally started. I've got my cd drive and converter, buffer interface, and sent a email to amigakit to see about making a power lead to power the hdd,cd,later date a sd reader, and 3 40mm fans.
I'm going to use the BPPC and bvision in the desktop so will 3 40mm fans be enough?
I've managed to pick up a powerbox psu which should have plenty of juice to power the system.
