Title: What do you use OS4 for?
Post by: motorollin on December 05, 2007, 02:45:47 PM
In my attempt to decide whether or not to look for a CSPPC, I'd be interested to hear some of the things people are using OS4 for (or plan to). Classic or A1, doesn't really matter since this is about OS4 not classic stuff.

I run a bunch of Linux games ported using SDL.  There isn't enough power in a classic Amiga to run SDL effectively.  Unfortunately, you can buy a Linux PC cheaper than the upgrade to AmigaOS 4.0 so this isn't a good reason to upgrade.  Worse still, a classic accelerator board isn't fast enough either.

What do I use it for?

Well, developing apps mainly, although I have yet to release any 'cause of time constraints and lack of motivation on occasion :p

What else? Well, IRC chat using wookiechat, also the occasional blast on Quake (1, 2 or 3) or Heretic II...

To be fair I pretty much use it for what I use OS3.9 for, but faster.. lol

I mean, at the moment there's probably not too much special OS4 stuff, but that's been due to the small user base and lack of hardware... Now it's expanding, hopefully there will be some nice new apps out :D

Edit: To be honest though, through my use of OS4, I've actually enjoyed using it quite a lot, just the core OS itself... It's like having a turbo charged 3.9 with prettier bits I suppose.. but OS4 is FAAAST

I do what average joe user do but with amigaone+os4 :
- surfing (mainly amiga sites) with IBrowse
- mail with simplemail
- downloading bittorrent files once in a while
- write articles for the french fanzine amigapower with WW7
- occasionnal playing through emulators (WarpSNES, E-UAE, DosBox and BasiliskII)
- for printing I switch to linux/debian (thx to dual boot)

Thanks all for the responses. Looks like all of the common tasks for OS4 are things I do with my Mac (and wouldn't want to do on my Amiga which is upstairs). So as much as I want to be able to say I can run OS4, I really can't justify the expense of the CSPPC upgrade just so I can boot OS4 once in a while and say "yes, it is quite fast isn't it", then boot immediately back in to 3.9 to do something else.

Bloodline, if you're reading, you know what this means don't you? ;-)

My main uses with OS 4.0:
-xMAME arcade emulation that's the main reason I buy my
Amiga One.
-Other emulators like Hatari,WarpSNES or Dosbox.
-OS 4 games via SDL most of it.
-Surf the web with IBrowse mainly Amiga sites.
-Mailing with YAM
-Burning CDs with MakeCD and ocasionally some DVD with AmiDVD.
-Play MP3 with AmigaAMP-
-Play games with SCUMM like Day of the Tentacle or Broken Sword 2.
-and more...

I am glad to say that I am very happy with my Amiga One since I received on 30 of June of 2006 configured from Amiga Super Bit after more than a year waiting and I want to improve my Amiga experience with the addition of Debian Linux and MacOS that I have lost accidentally last year.

Why would you need to boot into OS3.9 again? I'm pretty much sure that OS4 will do everything that u usually in 3.9...

Out of interest, what DO you do in 3.9?

Except play WHDLoad games.

Mostly classic gaming, but also light web surfing, email, and playing with emulators (Shapeshifter, PC-Task etc). Since WHDLoad games and (probably) those emulators are out the window for OS4, all that's really left (for me) is web and email - which I would rather do on my Mac anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to criticise OS4 here. I'm just saying it doesn't do anything I need which I can't already do on my Mac or OS3.9.

yea I thought the same thing.  I can buy OS4 but then I'd need a PPC card.  So I have to justify spending $800 (?) or whatever they go for, on a PPC card to play around w/a OS that cant do much for me.  Sometimes I wonder if I'm just spinning my wheels and the real AmigaOS replacement is right infront of my face (AROS).

Bingo. I hate the 'classic' nomiker as it makes it seem it will run on a stock amiga. which if it did would probably increase their sales base 10 fold.

I will be using it for the excitement :) Every time a new app will arrive, it will be so fun to just poke around testing.
In windows I really have everything but no excitement :)

Just the fun of having an os4 machine and be able to poke around and discover new things that the amiga can do will be a great feeling.
Isnt that what having a computer hobby is all about?

Two iPhones have been sold? ;-)

But seriously, it could take you months to get a CSPPC from Ebay and the price could be over £700 now that OS4 released (the last two I actually saw go through went for £500 a while ago now). After reading what you've said I think you may as well get the iPhone and hope that someone makes it possible to run OS4 on your Mac. That way you'll be able to have a play around with it, but without any great expense mate.

You are deciding *now* whether to get a PPC and run OS4. Some of us have been waiting with our PPC's for years. Personally after all this time I'd just be happy to sit there with a big grin on my face changing the Workbench backdrop. Everything else OS4 does will be an amazing bonus :-)

Good luck! :pint:

A4k mad:

for you it makes sense to get OS4 since your PPC is probably underutilized.  But for folks "thinking" about getting OS4, thats a big chunk of change that can go towards something different.

@ TheMagicM

Yes, I totally agree with you. Anyone looking to buy a CSPPC and OS4 is going to have to spend a lot of money which could go towards more important things.

I actually only told my wife yesterday how much my CSPPC cost. Had I told her 4 years ago that I was buying it to run OS4 one day, I think I would now be divorced

AMEM!!!  :-D
I still haven't told my wife the total cost of my "Madness" as she puts it... and i never will. :-)
As much as i would love a PPC and OS4 it really doesn't look like happening..  :-(   :boohoo:
One can only dream..  :-)

Yes, exactly. But for the huge cost of a CSPPC I really need it to do more than just provide a new playground for a while.

Well they weren't exactly affordable years ago! When they first came out (and nobody had even heard of OS4) I was in school and could never have afforded one. And now that they are more desirable than ever, I still can't afford one!

I wasn't suggesting that you should have decided earlier to get a CSPPC and OS4. The "*now*" in my post was merely intended to point out the time that you had chosen to consider doing it. Unfortunately this is the most expensive time you could have chosen mate  :-(

Oh ok. When I read the words my brainbox applied a slightly derisive tone. I really must try to teach it to stop doing that :-)

I know. But I suppose that's to be expected. Before OS4 Classic was released it was a gamble - buy the CSPPC and risk not having an (Amiga) OS to run on it. But now OS4 is released, it's to be expected that the price of the hardware required to run it will increase.
