I have recently acquired an amiga 4000D, and can see that overheating could be likely, so I am thinking of attaching a fan on the outside of the case on the left hand side, so air is blown into the zorro card space, this will require a large hole to be cut in the case.
Is anyone horrified that I could contemplate such an atrocity?

I aquired a A4000 with some holes drilled on the left side (in a circle pattern, looks ok), it also had a hideous fan attached on the outside. I ripped if off and it seems to be working fine with just the holes.

A good alternative is drill a circular hole in the front/leftmost position of the case and put some silk hog for better effect.
Or a fan grill.
Your choice.

Why not put in a slot fan? Under 22 db is preferred.

I did consider having a slot fan outside the case forcing air in through the ventilation holes in the rear panel, but I will probably drill holes in the side as suggested above, and fit a 120mm fan in the PSU.

My uncle's A4000 had a veryable speed controller on the front of the case which was linked to a fan somewhere inside the machine. Very odd thing it was.

Make sure your airflow makes sense. I have seen way too many people install fans in ways that don't help cooling, and sometimes they even make it worse! One guy I know will put a dozen fans inside a sealed case and thinks the fans are somehow cooling the computer, not heating it!
