not another one of those "do you remember this game?" posts!
indeed it is. the folks here seem very knowledgeable, so maybe you folks can help me with this one.
it was a multiplayer game with up to four players each controlling a little space ship.
the object of the game was to push enemies into a vortex that randomly appeared and moved around the playing field.
you couldn't actually damage ships by shooting them, but your shot would push them in a direction. plus you could bank a shot of the walls and nail some one on the other side of the arena.
there also was a group of ai controlled ships that spawned and if you managed to push them into the moving vortex, you would advance to the next stage.
the last couple of things i remember are that the levels had powerups, the arena was exactly the size of the screen, and the background was a blue grid that would deform as the vortex moved around it.
i believe the name of the game was the same as the name of the vortex that appeared, but no, the game is not called "vortex". = )
any help would be greatly appreciated. ever since i started thinking about this game i just remember more and more great times i had playing it!
thanks!

Could it be "Bratwurst"? It's a gravity game very similar to the one you disribed... But the verison I've got only has 2 player mode maybe it's an older version of this game?
And welcome to Amiga.org by the way :-)
happy hunting!
-
I've got a 4-player version of Bratwurst and its superb but I doubt its the game he's after. There's no moving vortex in Bratwurst and you definetaly cause damage by shooting the others, not just push them around... Maybe it's some other PD game or so... Does'nt sound like any commersial game i recognise.
-
Sounds like the pd game "mayhem", atleast i remembered it that way u described it :-)
-
@mepmepmep
hmm... Think you're right...
I'm with the idea of the game being PD... Can't remember any any commerial games like this...
-
its not bratwurst,
tho that game is fun with 2 players.
I don't know what game it is either,
but I liked the concept of it,
so I might make a similar game myself...
I too have memories of a game I tried
loooooooong ago on either c64 or amiga500.
it was in the platform gender,
but the character was a small guy
that started at the top left of the game screen
wich was only a part of the whole game area.
This guy was shining white
and might only have been drawn with lines.
And he was a sorcerer,
or atleast had magical powers.
he could run, but im not sure if he could jump.
the only other thing I remember
was that I stood on one side of a pool of water
and then used a scroll that teleported me to the other side of the pool.
this pool was beneath and to the right of the starting point,
but one had to get there by first
running to the (far right)
and then down and to the left,
then up and right again -IIRC-
the game was rich in colour
and had a cute touch to it.
anyone?
I really want to try this game again!...
here is sketch of how the game might look
at start of the game:
p=player
g=ground, dirt
w=water
o=pool construction
.=empty space
p
gggggggggggggggggggggggggg outside of screen
gggggggggggggggggggggggggg
gggggggggoo............oo
gggggggggoowwwwwwwwwwwwoo

Beyond the Ice Palace is the only game that springs to mind.. On the Amiga, but very 64ish. A really early Amiga platformer.. But maybe not!?
-
Is it similar to gravity force? if yes, then it must be "Mayhem"
-
is this (http://amiga.emucamp.com/mayhem.htm) the game you're talking about? Don't look like a 4-player game to me?
-
Since this is a "name the game" thread I'm gonna ask you for another game ... I don't remember much but I'm sure someone will know this one :
It's a platform game. You were a fairy with a magic staff, that had very limited range, but when you got an enemy you hurled it over your head, banging it to the floor several times.
It was a fun to play game in the two player mode. And I can't wait to get this game again after all those years.
tnx in advance! :-P
-
Sounds like one of those cutie games... Rainbow Islands, Parasol Stars or Rodland? Maybe.. Except for the fairy.. Something similar it must be..
-
Haven't checked it out yet... but when I saw the title Rodland it came all back to me... that's it... thanks man! have a VB (virtual beer) on me. :pint: :-D
-
mepmepmep: no, theres another game called "mayhem" also, made by some guys from a demo group, crusaders or something
-
> Beyond the Ice Palace
I saw a screenshot now, and its not the game I remember.
the character was much smaller iirc,
and the game was much cuddlier.
-
first off, thanks for all the replies.
looking at the screen shot mepmepmep linked too, that is definitley not the game.
the screen did not scroll. all the action took place on a single screen, but trust me, it was done right.
please don't hate me, but it could have possibly been an atari ST game. i owned both systems at the same time, and loved them both deeply. of course the amiga won me over as it was clearly a superior machine when it came to graphics (my line of work).
the game i'm thinking of also was commercially released. it was not a demo or freeware, and the quality showed. it had super tight visuals, game play, and design.
don't know if that helps ring any bells.
i've checked some amiga game list on-line, but they all seem incomplete. although they brought back tons of memories. airball anyone?
-
howdy folks.
well i don't know how i missed such a fantastic game list, but after perusing the seemingly endless list of titles that could match this game, i found what i was after.
the title of the game is Ebonstar, which as i remember it now is NOT the name of the vortex, but the name of the little satellite that creates the vortex.
anyway...check it out if you get the chance. really a fantastic game.

thanks!

Well I was'nt even close.. Never heard of the thing, let alone played it.. But it sure looks like a sweet game.. If it supports the parallell 4-player joystick adapter too, it would be just be awesome.. But that's probably asking too much..

I can't rememberbut, I did see it once
