Title: Graphics card for a 1200
Post by: Starrunner on November 21, 2007, 09:19:43 PM
Is there a graphics card that will work in an A1200 that does not require something like a Mediator setup?  I am curious because I am still looking to find something that will get me off my 1084S and onto a newer monitor.

Hmm..Yes and NO :) If you have Bppc you can using BVision GFX card..If you dont have...You need Mediator,Zorro Bussboard + GFX card or Ateo Bussboard and Ateo GFX card..

And only for BPPC-Bvision you can install in classic A1200 sandwich ..for all other option you need tower!

@Starrunner

I think there is another way to get agfx card inside there without towering it. I think there is a card called Pixel64 that fits into the keyboard case fo the 1200.

If you dont mind not having the same resoultion, thee is the option of a scandoubler/scan convertor that makes Amigas output into VGA so that you can connect to a VGA monitor.

ANother option is to get a DCTV which is really an external Frame buffer that gives you apparently 16 million colors.  I heard there is ahack that lets you run Workbench on a DCTV but it will be throgh composite out of the DCTV only, so you need a TV. I have the hacks somewhere on my harddrive.

Nevertheless...........DCTV is cool!  it makes the Amiga think it is displaying only a 16 color picture but it outputs 16 million colors..............so that means any animation running in DCTV mode runs faster because Amiga thinks its 16 colors only.

Another option..........Get a Genlock with S-Video OUT and connect yout 1200 to a large S-Video TV or Projector..........and You will have an awesome setup. Personally I have a Projector with a built in Flicker Fixer.........so nothing flickers :-)   I got it for about $700 then got a $200 rebate back...........so it cost me $500.

to bad there isnt anything that dont use the ppc and zorro...

the closest thing is the graffiti.. but no drivers only amiga mac emulator take real advantage of this one...

if only a wiz-kid could build upon the graffiti idea and make it into something that was as powerful as pixel64....

 You can a "sort-of" graphic card, as a Grafitti (http://www.jschoenfeld.com/products/graffiti_e.htm)  "video card".

 Although is an external unit and don't do scan doubling nor flicker fixing.

 It's more like an AGA-experience for non-AGA machines...

 But still a great piece of hardware.

Aside from the usual A1200 Zorro/PCI tower busboards, Eyetech used to sell a single slot Zorro II adapter for the A1200 which allowed the connection of a Cybervision64/3D lying flat against the A1200 motherboard.  I don't think you could close the original A1200 case on top of it and you had to use an external keyboard but it did work apparently.

Amiga Format did a write up of it in one of their later issues - 1998 or 1999. It was an absolutely hideous arrangement, just a motherboard and components lying on a slab, but it was considered fairly inexpensive at the time.
