Title: OS 3.9 CD-Rom drive detection
Post by: arkpandora on November 14, 2007, 07:54:25 PM
Hi,

I am new to OS 3.9, and I don't know how to make it detect my CD-Rom drive without having to rely on shareware packages like IDE-fix or AmiCDFS.  The drive is connected as "slave" along with a "master" hard drive on the IDE port of an A4000D with KS 3.1.  As I have never mounted any CD-Rom drive manually, some help would be welcome.  Here's what I have done, successively :

1. On a newly partioned and formatted hard drive, installed OS 3.1.
2. Installed "IDE-Fix '97" in order to setup the CD-Rom drive, which worked immediately.
3. Installed OS 3.9 after booting from the hard drive.  As advised by the installer, I created an Emergency-disk and tried to start the installation again booting from this disk, but whatever the options I chose in the installer, the disk didn't detect the CD-Rom drive, showing instead an error message : "Cannot open scsi.device unit 1" or "Cannot open atapi.device unit 1" according to the drive type I chose in the installer.
4. Installed BoingBag 1 et 2 and rebooted at least one time after each update.
5. Uninstalled IDE-Fix.
6. Before rebooting (in order to keep the CD), started OS 3.9 installer again in order to run the CD-Rom drivers installation option (I don't remember its name), then rebooted.  But the CD drive isn't detected : during boot the computer says "Cannot open scsi.device unit 1" again.

OS 3.9 installs "CacheCDFS" and a "CD0" that points to scsi.device and contains the right unit number (1).  And if I understand well, OS 3.9 comes with a new scsi.device that should detect the drive.  So, do you know where the problem lies ?

Thank you for any advice !

Hi,

I would suggest that you install IDEfix and get your CDrom working again if you can. Then when creating the Emergency-Disk be sure to click on 'UseIDEFix' at this screen.

The files for your CDrom should then be copied to the Emergency-Disk so that your CDrom works when you boot into it :-)

EDIT - Also see where the link goes that amije posted while I was creating this masterpiece :-D

Unfortunately, there I don't find any answer to my problem.

Wow, lively tutorial.

I did try this "Use IDEfix" option, as well as the "Use SCSI" option : when booting from the Emergency-disk the computer then says "Cannot open atapi.device unit 1".  But even if the Emergency-disk worked with IDEfix, would booting from the floppy really help OS 3.9 install CD drive detection on the hard drive without IDEfix ?

Hi,

The IDEFix that was written to the Emergency-Disk will work regardless of whether it is still installed on the hard drive. You will get  "Cannot open atapi.device unit 1" if the unit number is set incorrectly on the driver CD0 in Devs/DOSDrivers of the Emergency-Disk.

Anyway, I've emailed you my Emergency-Disk as an ADF file together with ADF-Blitzer in case you need that to unpack it. I've set the driver CD1 to unit 1. It's worth giving it a try mate :-)

Thank you again for the disk : I have just e-mailed you back again.

What I meant is that a working Emergency-disk would only be useful to me here if you need one in order to install OS 3.9 properly, that is in order to install the CD drive as well.

I have just turned the Amiga on again : I had left it without IDEfix hence without the CD drive being detected (as I could not make the CD work only with OS 3.9's CD drivers), but now the CD is automatically detected...  Therefore it was just a matter of switching the computer off then on after installing the two BoingBag and the CD drivers of OS 3.9.  I guess the ROM update is involved here.
