Title: AmigaOne Lite ITX for AT PSU
Post by: asian1 on July 13, 2003, 05:34:19 PM
Hello
I read about the new AmigaOne Lite with tiny ITX
form factor.
There are several thousands old PC-AT / Baby AT case
with 300W Power Supply (PC Power & Cooling) sold
at local auction.
Is it possible to create AmigaOne ITX boards that use PC AT
PSU and USB/Serial/Parallel connectors with cables?
If possible perhaps this board can be used to upgrade
old PC AT /Baby AT system.
Is this possible?

1. The Mini-A1 does not exist, and won't exist for quite a while.

2. It will be mATX not ITX.

3. Why should someone trying to update his 10 year old PC go for an A1 ?

4. Why should he keep that old case, when a new ATX one can be had for a few $ ?

1. 3. and 4. are IMO subjective and so I won't argue about them.

But I'm afraid you're wrong on number 2. the A1-lite is
suposed to be a mini-ITX form factor.

It's the A1 (rev 2) that is planned to be a micro-ATX (http://www.topshine.com.tw/Show/Teron_mPX_IBM_020803.pdf) formfactor board.

Replace the AT PSU with an ATX and an ATX power button.

1: wrong
2: wrong, it's double eurocard, as per the slide here: http://paula.tidstrand.com/amigbg_slides/09.jpg (http://paula.tidstrand.com/amigbg_slides/09.jpg). The mATX AmigaOne (http://paula.tidstrand.com/amigbg_slides/08.jpg (http://paula.tidstrand.com/amigbg_slides/08.jpg)) is mATX
3: why would he not? Who says someone who has a really old PC won't go for a mini AmigaOne? I have a really old PC, and I bought an AmigaOne ;-)
4: I kinda agree. There's all kinds of cool modern cases you can get for next to nothing, so don't bother converting an old AT case...

@Olegil:

About (1) - do you mean "wrong" as in "wrong, it does exist" or "wrong, it will exist soon"?

Do you know if the micro-A1 will also be in the $800 range, or cheaper?  a micro-atx A1 with a $300-$400 price tag would definitely kick ass...

@olegil

1. So, 2 slides are enough to proof existance ?
Thought we had learned better by Escena_A1, BoXeR, P5-G3/4 ......

All these existed in more than slides. the BoXeR even worked, but none ever came into existance
(you know, really available for Joe-beer-belly).

If the schematics are all they have on the mATX,  I would guess it's gone take atleast another year
before they have something ready for sale (again, long experience in this "market").

The ITX one is in an even earlier state of being just a bit more than an idea. So I stand by my
initial statement.

2. Well o.k. I didn't know they had two seperate plans.

@Kronos:

1: no, but according to a person I know (and trust) it's really not that far off. Remember when I told you the XE was working back in September 2002 and would ship before Christmas? Well, it was, and it would have, except it got a teensy bit delayed.

2: You obviously didn't bother to check facts before replying, then. Which goes to show you're not really concerned with facts if you can throw dirt at the AmigaOne. Please at least TRY to give the right answers, eh?

@Olegil

1. So what ? That doesn't make it an more real. And you have told alot of stuff about the A1-XE being
ready right now, but it is a fact that it only started shipping in real numbers well into 2003.
Lot of excuses were given, but none was really convicing.

2. Throw dirt ? Hows that when I only pointed the obvious flaws in Asian's post ?

It does not exist, simple.
As long as I don't see a working proto it's not real.
As long as I can't buy it does not exist (in an enduser-version).

It's really hard to believe that after all the vapour producs, and exciting (tm) announcemts
made from all sides over the years, we still have people taken them for face-value ....

i hope the ITX board will be priced nicely (half the price of the a1 XE maybe? ) ..if it does then i know alot of theese baby's will be sold.

anyway whats the fuzz about? its ITX and its small and its nothing for kronos anyway :)

btw ,welcome back ole egil! (from yer vacation)

cheers

I'd like to see a version with an horizontal CPU slot. Kinda like the A1200.

Hey, someone could do A1200 like transparent cases, and put the mobos in there. Cool!!! :-D

Olegil: I think we both know that there can well be years from erly specs (and prototype component placements) to real product. But If they'll happen soon and be resonably priced (less than 1/2 of cheapest Aone) It'll be interesting product.

johannak:only one thing i fear...that is... size normally means money... the smaller the more expensive. i hope that doesnt apply for the a1 lite.. (because of the market anyway)

Well details about the Teron mPX can be found here (http://www.topshine.com.tw/Show/Teron_mPX_IBM_020803.pdf). Not really news.

Lempkee:  There are many variables affecting final board manufacturing cost.. Like number of pcb layers, board size and tolerances on manufacturing... (Via and drill sizes, trace witdhs etc.. ).. Board size itself ain't the major price factor (and smaller is cheaper if everythng else holds the same).. But if one has to use multiple additional layers for routing on undersized board (like those Blizzards for A1200) then size becomes costly.

But.. Quite frankly board manufacturing prices have never been real issue on those AmigaOnes.. Real cost comes from extra middlemen between board makers and users.

True. Target is beginning 2004.

Well, it is ITX (170x170mm)

BTW: Gigabit eth , USB2.0, Firewire and Cardbus. S0 DIMM memory, but 1 PCI only, gfx onboard.

And it's now called AmigaOne Lite (instead AmigaOne SE Lite) because it is based on the XE design (MegaArray cpu slot).

If you complain about PCI/gfx there is still the XE, and ... ;)

johannak: thanx for good info and honest thoughts! , i hope that this one aint beeing switched back and forth so that the price will be correct , as it will affect how many who will buy it for normal usage , its the most logical step for an a1200 owner to go...

cheers

@joe_average:

Do you know what kind of built-in gfx? I'm guessing the microATX A1 will end up being similar to the Teron mPX (maybe a rebadge, maybe a few extra things), but I don't know of any other PPC ITX motherboards.

Wow, an mATX Amiga motherboard with built-in graphics.  I'd bet they're using the VIA graphics solutions found in the VIA"C" series ITX motherboards.  While not exactly GeForce 4Ti class, the folks at mini-itx.com seem to like them.

As to the original poster's question, for a few dollars an AT to ATX power converter cable; given the low power requirements of the 950fx CPU, a 300w AT power supply might do well enough.  Lord knows they're cheap enough if you can find them...

>AT to ATX power converter cable

Hello,
I read that modern ATX power supply provide 3.3V
and +5Vsb power. Old AT PSU does not provide the
low voltage. Also the power switch of ATX is on
the motherboard, not the PSU.

Is this converter cable really works?
Does the AmigaOne mATX / ATX need 3.3 Volt?

>ITX PowerPC
There is a PowerPC 800 MHz Briq from TotalImpact
that use ordinary hard disk power supply connector.
This product is similar to ROSS SparcPlug that
enable ordinary PC user to put SparcStation clone
on the drive bay.

Unfortunately AmigaOS 4 cann't run on top of BRIQ,
because BRIQ does not use MAI chipset.
