Title: How can I convert an mp3 audio file to an IFF file (to use in OctaMED)?
Post by: gavinb on November 11, 2007, 08:41:31 AM
I am using an Amiga Forever emulator on my Windows XP to use OctaMED Professional v3.0 (downloaded from: http://amr.abime.net/issue_595_coverdisks).

I have audio samples in mp3 format and I would like to use them in OctaMED. As far as I can see, the format that I can use is IFF.

I have looked everywhere for a file converter but all I could find was conversion to AIF, which doesn't seem to work in OctaMED.

I know OctaMED and am comfortable using it, so I wouldn't want to change to another music editor.

If possible, I would like to know how to convert from mp3 to any file format that OctaMED can use. Please help.

Thankyou.

Hi, If Octamed can use IFF, then maybe it can use Wav files too ? Its been years since I fired Octamed up, so I can't help any more than that  :-)

@gavinb

To convert mp3 to 22kHz mono 8-bit (8SVX) sample:

mpega (http://www.aminet.net/package/mus/play/MPEGA35) -s -A "4 Mat - Anarchy Menu 01.mp3" -o temp.aiff

sox (http://www.aminet.net/package/dev/gg/sox-12.17.3bin) temp.aiff -r22000 -c1 "4 Mat - Anarchy Menu 01.8svx"

PS. Some sox builds handle mp3 directly. I think the m68k version doesn't, however, thus going thru aiff temporary file.

OctaMED SoundStudio 1.03c will handle .WAV and .AIFF files so you could skip the SOX portion on it.

If you want to do a bit more than just converting from mp3 you could try Sample Manager (http://samplemanager.hd-rec.de).

Thanks for the help guys.

I downloaded the try-before-you-buy version of Goldwave from http://www.download.com/GoldWave/3000-2170_4-10754826.html?tag=lst-1

It's perfect, but it's not free and I don't spend enough time on converting music files to make it worth it. If there is a free (or pretty cheap) package out there somewhere that does something similar to this then it would be great to get a copy of it.

I have just got here to have a look at your replies and I've just downloaded the SOX sound converter and I'll get back to you on how succesful I am with it.

OctaMED does allow you to load wav files but it tends to load up as just static. Aif seems to be the wrong format (it might be more appropriate for Apple software) and OctaMED much prefers IFF to anything else.

I'm after an easily searchable source of samples on the internet now, but that's something I'll have a bit of a look for myself before I bother you guys.

Cheers

Since you're obviously planning to do the conversion on the PC, I recommend to have a look at Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), which is free & open source.

Speaking about sample editors by the way: I saw download sources of Aegis Audiomaster on the web, does anyone knoe if they are legal?
