Title: User-startup problem
Post by: oldman3000 on November 11, 2007, 01:44:50 AM
I'm getting my 3000 tower up, but I have a small problem.  I am having software errors when my workbench comes up, it goes to yellow letters and numbers about 7 times and then works great.  I do not know the command to show all of the startup-sequence and user-startup display.  I would like to edit it so I can debug this problem.  I'm using 3.9 and 2.1, it boots up fine in 2.1.  I would like to run 1 command so I can go through 1 command at a time.  I guess it has been awhile from my tower.

Thanks for any help

a couple of ways you can do this:

One is to boot without a startup-sequence by holding both mouse buttons when the computer starts.  At the command prompt, simply type each of the lines of your startup-sequence manually, one by one, until you find which one is triggering the failure.

Another is to edit your startup-sequence and remove all the instances of ">NIL:", "NOREQ", and "QUIET".  Just make sure you backup the file before you edit it.  Boot the computer with the modified file and you will see the output of each command and, theoretically, the output of whichever one precedes the failure you are trying to isolate.

Another is to output everything to a file rather than ">NIL:", but this is a little bit more complicated.  Try the other two things first.

At first I thought the problem was Opus, but it is effecting the icons.  The images goes down to a few colors.  I think the problem is turbo print.  I'll type one line at time and see what happens.  I backup the both startup files.  I think I'll remove the user-startup and add one command at a time.  Thanks for the information.

You can also add:

echo "Checkpoint 1 passed"

between the commands.

I found some programs in WBstartup that I have removed and now system runs correctly without software errors.  The programs that I removed is:
ASyncWB which I had a call out waiting for it to finish
PatchWB not sure what this program did or does?
StartPatchWB also removed, unclear also what it does?
