Title: Distant Suns Amiga update, any interest?
Post by: Pyromania on November 08, 2007, 04:00:05 AM
Would anyone be interested in an update to this classic Amiga application? We are in contact with the company and might push forward if there is any interest. The current version is 6.0. The Amiga version has not been updated in a long while. It is a great package though.

I just got the latest 5.x version a couple years ago for Christmas... I'd love to see v6 under a tree soon :)

Yes indeed!! as long as it ran fairly well on a 030 50Mhz with WB3.9. I am very interested in Astronomy in general and Distant Suns on the Amiga is an excellent application.

I'd be interested. I had bought Distant Suns for my A1200 back in the day. Not sure if it was v4 or v5.

I was always a big Distant Suns fan - I even got the CD version way back when.

digital universe (http://www.digitaluniverse.org.uk/) is another program that is currently being worked on.

>God that made me laugh hard for some reason

He's not God.  God's perspective is different from that of Distant Suns.

@weirdami

If this was done it would be updated to the same features as the 6.0 Windows version.

Is it RTG?

Thanks.

That would be great! I have version 4, but with the ability to import current global cloud patterns off the net, etc., I'd gladly upgrade.

@cecilia

Digital Universe is a great package. If we do this we will not do an OS 4.0 version to avoid hurting sales of that fine package. This is per our mission statement.

http://www.discreetfx.com/Mission.html

That of course does not rule out doing OS 3.9, AROS & MorphOS versions since Digital Universe is not available for those...

If there is enough demand.

Myself and many of my friends would be interested in buying if a floppy disk edition is created.

On the subject of Amiga Astronomy, has anyone tried Digital Almanac on Aminet? Its the complete version from around 2003 that the author recently contributed to the Amiga community

I would love to see DS updated, it's one of my favorites.  The question has already been asked, what new features are we talking about, RTG, 060 compatibility, usabilitywith more databases?

I love that it runs on an un-accelerated A500.  If it would also display on a larger screen, I would use it on my whole range of machines.

Distant Suns is a great program.

I purchased the software (V4.3) back in the early 80s and I loved it.

I am a buyer for a V6.

@Tenacious

The Amiga source code is lost, so if it was ported to AROS, MorphOS & Amiga OS 3.9 it would have to be from the Windows code of version 6.0. RTG? of course, but the problem is their would have to be enough demand to justify the port.

Wow.  I wonder if that was why Mike Smithwick never wanted to look back from the Windows version.

I've tried the Windows version (there was a demo or something), it was very good.

Yes, sign me up for a copy.

Really? I thought that was sort of bad form for commercial software developers. And Mike is an old-time Amiga guy, too. It will make back-porting a lot more time consuming.

Looks like there is some new (Yeah!) competition, too:

There is nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition, it will make both our packages better ;-)

I do have DS5 on CD already but the hardware banging made it awkward to run on graphics card equipped Amigas including of course the Amiga One. I eventualy got Vista Pro to run on the A1 but had no luck with DS :-(

Good luck with your project, if the hardware banging is fixed in DS I'll probably buy a copy myself.

Bill.

@BillE

We are not sure if we are going forward on this since the Amiga source code is lost and all that is available is the Windows code (for porting purposes). There would have to be serious demand.
