Hi
First of all Hello, Im new to the site and im a reborn Amiga user from the past. My 1200 has been sitting in the attic for 10 years aand I've recently installed a HDD and an 8MB memory expansion board.
I installed Workbench 3.1 to the HDD and all was well. The I made themistake of installing a game and placing it directly on DH0: . Now when i start the amiga it loads the game automatically and doesn't go straight to the work bench.
I tried removing the directory of the game on DH0: and now i just get an error as it cant find the files it needs to load the game. I can get to the workbench screen by booting off my Workbench floppy, so what do i need to edit to stop the amiga from calling upon the game file?

welcome home :-)
after boot with workbenchb3.1 floppy (or install3.1)
try to open/read the startup-sequence file in DH0:S directory. if it has change, delete it and copy the file startup-harddrive from install3.1 disk at the Update directory to DH0:S and rename it to startup-sequence.
reboot.

You can also put a line first into the startup-sequence:
failat 21
and then the script can continue even with a bigger error.

Or you can hold both mouse buttons down during boot, then select "boot with no startup-sequence" from the Early Startup menu.

Thankyou all for your input. I'm still getting my head around the way workbench works in comparison to windows. It looks like alot of files need an application to open them . ie. how do i open the startup file to edit it without a text viewer? Is their a default text viewer in W.B.
And can you recommend a list of basic apps i should install for the most everyday used applications to open the most common file extentsions.

and type:
ed dh0:s/startup-sequence

Hi NEOband,
As said by Jase, switch on your Amiga while keeping both mouse buttons held down. This will bring you to the 'Amiga Early Startup Control' screen.
Click on 'Boot With No Startup-Sequence'.
At the next screen to appear type:-
ed S/startup-sequence
and press the ENTER key.
Your startup-sequence should now appear and you will be able to edit it.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the cursor up and down the startup-sequence. If you see a line that refers to that game causing the problem, just put a semi-colon ; at the beginning of it to deactivate that line.
Once you've finised making changes you hold down the right mouse button and select 'Save' from the heading titled 'Project at the top left of the screen.
Amigas don't require 3 letter file extensions like PC's do :-)
Oh... The text viewer in Workbench is called MultiView and is found in the drawer called Utilities.
If you still have problems we can tell you how to transfer the startup-sequence from your Workbench floppy disk into the Workbench partition of your hard drive.
Actually, I think you would just boot into your Workbench floppy disk, then go into the drawer called System, double click on the Shell icon to get a command line and type:-
COPY DF0:S/startup-sequence TO DH0:S
An application I would certainly get is DirectoryOpus4 which is a FREE (http://dopus.free.fr/download.php) download now :pint:

Yeah, that's something peculiar to the Amiga operating system. It's something modern files have done away with.

OK great so far
my machine boots to the workbench, however now my HDD icon has changed to a picture of an f1 car, how do i get back my original amiga hdd icon?>

at the root of DH0: there is a file called disk.info
find one with a more interesting image and replace it.
in aminet you can find some .info setups.
for wb3.1 a good setup is the MagicWorkbench.

Erm..... Well assuming you want your Workbench partition to have the same icon that you have for your Work partition at the moment:-
COPY Work:Disk.info TO Workbench:
(Note that you will need to restart your Amiga to see the changed icon)
