Title: OS3.9 Icon Colours
Post by: r6stu on October 29, 2007, 12:42:03 PM
Why is it when I install OS3.9 on a clean HD. that the Icons are all 4 colour?

I have set the SM to 256 colours, all of the desktop icons are fine, but all of the folders and wb icons are still 4 colour?

Cheers.

PS. If I install ontop of OS3.5 its ok,but that means 3.1>3.5>3.9

That is odd. Why don't you install directly over 3.1 as you don't need update it first to 3.5?

I have exactly the same problem.

They are the icons on a 32 colour WB. They appear the same even at 256 colours.

Some of the newer icons that are added later, e.g. IBrowse, WookieChat etc look fine.

Did you install from an Emergency Disk?

But did you boot from the Emergency Disk before you started the installation?

It sounds like you installed from Workbench 3.1, not from the Emergency Disk like you're supposed to (what moto is talking about above).  A clean install should fix it.

Why do you have 3.1 in this list ? The correct way is empty hdd -> 3.9 or empty hdd -> 3.5 -> 3.9 if you insist on upgrading.

Both 3.5 and 3.9 allow you to create a boot disk (a.k.a. emergency disk). Once you have created such, you can through away your 3.1 disks. In 3.9 it's even the first step of the installation and it says "do this first" (at least the german translation does). Why did you skip it ?

If you really don't want to boot from a 3.9 disk and insist on using your old and dated 3.1 disks, including a painful lot of disk changes during installation, you can install 3.9, reboot and install 3.9 again. Then the icons are ok.

Im using a Zappo cd rom, so I have to install the drivers and cd handlers onto workbench to beable to install OS3.9.

I have also tries booting from the zappo boot disc and installing 3.9 but its the same.

If the OS3.9 installer does not manage to copy your CD-ROM drivers to the emergency disk, you can do it manually. That's no reason not to use the emergency disk.

I might try and install from the emergency disk then. I think I tried to make one once and it didn't work but I can't remember.

That's not really surprising - installing from the Emergency Disk is necessary for OS3.9 to install properly. If you don't do it, you will have problems. You need to create the Emergency Disk and then manually copy the drivers for your CD-ROM on to the disk.

Basically it's only the icons which goes wrong when installing from OS < 3.5. You only need the new icon.library being active, then it will work. For example you could do the OS 3.5 "pre" installation and then install OS 3.9 full. Or as I said above, just install OS 3.9, reboot and install again.

The emergency disk will just save you a lot of disk changes and manual installation once you have it working. The emergency disk makes the OS 3.1 disks obsolete.
