Title: Tell Elbox, OS4 is nearly released
Post by: AndrewBell on October 22, 2007, 12:24:06 AM
Anyone think Elbox will make an announcement about the Shark soon?

My fantasy product of choice is the Dragon. I'd rather see OS4 run on [now outdated] Apple hardware.

from what was understood, os4 will only be on classics with ppc (cs and bliz) not new hardware at least not yet!
I'm no longer excited about it anymore anyway, as stated I doubt it will ever materialize!

now i'm not sure what the rumble about macmini is? someone clarify.. are we porting or using emulation to run os4 under its ppc chipset?

Yes, but Elbox always maintained that OS4 Classic would work on the Shark out of the box. Obviously, they were talking out of their rectums, but I'm still curious as to whether they will try to get a product out.

Interestingly, on the Shark product pages Elbox state that: "Production of SharkPPC+ cards will start as soon as the final version of AmigaOS4.0 for A1 is released." Note it says A1, not classic.

Apparently some of the documents related to the court case mention an agreement to get OS4 running on a Mac mini, and other documents state that this had been achieved.

Interesting, if that happens I would imagine the PPCMacMini ebay prices will soar to the heights of a used IntelMacPro. Too bad the MacMini isn't Military Spec...

MacMini prices are already high... not that great a spec , military or otherwise...

You can get a PPC Mac-mini for about ?280, and the price and spec are better than a micro-A1.

I was about to comment on the availability of refurbished PowerPC Macs directly from Apple, but they don't appear to have any in their online store at the moment. Still, if the day comes, a trip to a local school or university should yield results, depending on their disposal policies. (I was given an iMac about a week ago.)

That is not the only part of the page that requires some updating. Not only the MPC7450 is no longer in production, also it's succesor (the MPC7455) is no longer in production, they would have to get the MPC7457 if they really think in producing said expansion board.

I dont think hyperion has a license for the shark anyways..
If that was the case, then one could simply make a next generation board with a optional slot for the amiga as a loophole to get around the licensing issues.

@Tomas

That doesn't matter, AFAIK the Classic version is gonna be available for sale to anyone.
It would be a serious kick in the ass if Elbox turned out to release something now but I doubt it...

When the classic version becomes available Elbox will probably try and get it running on the SharkPPC.  I don't now if being able to run the classic version on BPPC/CSPPC with a Shark plugged into the Mediator at the same time will help them to patch it to run.

If it is possible for them to do that in a way that doesn't infringe Amiga Inc or Hyperion's IP they will no doubt release the Shark with a custom installer for OS4.

If they cannot achieve this on their own, they will hopefully try and work something out with Hyperion.  If we are lucky Hyperion will deem this as safe as releasing the classic version for BPPC/CSPPC.

Just my guesses based on past behaviour of Elbox.

Come on, the Shark is nothing but a rebranded Sonnet card for the MAC.
Even IF they can get OS4 running, which I strongly doubt, then chances are great that Sonnet no longer produces these cards. And no, I don't see elbox having warehouses full of stock just waiting to be sold.

I count on Shark being 100% vaporware. Maybe even the Dragon, which was supposed to have been released ages ago.

Nope, I am not betting on Elbox. My hopes for new hardware in the short(ish) term is on E3B's excellent USB card and maybe some interesting stuff from Jens.

Softwarehut and several other vendors and even myself have repeatedly emailed elbox they wont return emails with the question of "Will you be selling the shark again soon "

Hell Even software hut emailed me
and said if i hear from elbox about the
card to let them know  !!

(( NOT VERY GOOD SIGNS ))
