I am getting random crashes. What version of 68040 lib should i have? I tried using a version from a powerUP system disk. Im trying to make the A4000 a bit more stable....if i walk away for an hour it's locked up :(

You know, if your crashes are random, perhaps software isn't the issue. Check your CPU card, memory, connectors etc. Make sure your system isnt getting too hot or has a dodgy power supply.
Failing that, what 68040 card do you have? I don't think you should be using the PowerUP versions unless you have a phase5 card.
Check your OS install disks to see if you have the original version for 3.1.
If all else fails, try the mmu lib version.

Be sure of your PSU and the airflow;
the 040 is quite sensible to the heat !! :rtfm:

I don't think that it is related with the 68040 library either, but here is the version i'm using without issues:
68040.library 46.13 (Friday 5 October 2001)

is it always best to use the latest lib ? I have a warp engine board, should I use latest phase 5 libs, or original warp engine/commodore libs ?

Well... it works fine for ahwile.. maybe it is getting hot... I'me using a rounded IDE cable, so there's only the floppy in the way.
It's got:
Cybervision 64/3D
Emplant Deluxe
Buddha IDE
Repulse
40GB HDD
50X CD-R
Maybe I'll remove the emplant or the repulse. My 040 card is just the 3640 Rev. 3.1 I made sure it's nice and snug. Memory is installed and snug.
Anything triggers it, I could be in FinalWriter, or MadHouse could kick in and it just locks up. You guys think I should try snoopdos? If it were heat related I could boot from a diskette and it should lock up right?
-
Well I think you are right Karlos. It's not the library, but I think it's overheating. I took my repulse out and the emplant, but that cybervision64/3d gets pretty hot. I left it off over night and it didn't crash at all and was running fine for at least 30 mins before I left work.
So, how can I cool it off better? Should I get an exhaust fan for the card area? or should it be blowing air over the components? Any advice is welcomed!

They make these fans that you sit in one of your open slots on the back that sucks air out. I found those useful.

I had a 3640 suffering from random crashes. It turned out to be due to a bad (missing) capacitor. There are various threads and websites about this issue... check them out.

There's a possibility that it's that rounded cable causing the trouble... read this...

Good read. I'll try it. It just weird It just freezes.. one minute it's fine and 30 mins later it locks up!

Its the heat. I took out the repulse, and the emplant, and moved the cybervision to the top of the case. Has been running for about 24hours straight now... I ordered a slot fan that someone mentioned.. i'm going to move the cybervision back to the bottom and move the buddha back to the top.. and put the fan card in the middle...
Thanks for your help everyone!
