Ive been modding the a1200 for the past few months as funds allow and i am trying to make my stock WB3.0, can't afford 3.1 ROMS yet still saving for my scandoubler!, look a tad better. Problem is that i cant use any of my .JPG images from my Linux PC off of amiga.org as it seems to only like .IFF images. I have tried converting them to dosens of other formats including .BMP and even loading them in to every drawring and vector package i have on the A1200:-( . I guess there would'nt be a problem if i could save images to the .IFF format on the pc, but theres no option in The Gimp to do this:-? . I transfer files using the CROSSDOS driver PC0: which allows me to read dos formatted double density disks, the ones with only one hole. :-D

Get Personal Paint or GfxCon from Aminet. Both are free.
GfxCon (http://ftp.plig.org/aminetbin/find?gfxcon)
Personal Paint (http://ftp.plig.org/aminetbin/find?Personal+Paint)

GFXcon is by far the gratest GFX converter program I've used.
I even run it on UAE to do gfx conversions.

Stock A1200 means no HD?
If you DO have a HD you could install a JPEG datatype to view JPGs...
There are a couple of GIMP plugins to handle ILBM (IFF) although I don't know how well they work.
On the PC, I think OLD versions of Photshop used to support IFF and I think so does PaintShopPro, version 5 on which recently did the rounds on lots of PC cover disks.

Well it was stock until i put it into a desktop case and added one of those great EZIDE interfaces from eyetech :-D . Hell i have to pop the lid of the case to type any thing at the moment whist i wait for my KBD interface to come though, but coming back to the subject...

where can i get this i presume from AmiNet :-? :-D

Paint Shop Pro 5 on the PC can save "Amiga (*.iff)" files, I think the latest version does aswell (I heard it does tho I don't have any kind of proof)

Try this link, there's a few datatypes on it but I don't know which is the best.
Aminet JPEG Datatype (http://us.aminet.net/aminet.cgi?string=jpeg+datatype)

Yes, the latest version still supports the iff format. However, that's a bit pointless unless you happen to have access to a Windows machine.

Actually thats a common misconception about linux, WINE the windows>linux binary emulator is now quite stable and also known to run Paint Shop Pro 5 along with other utils like Photoshop and even MS Office 2000 without a hitch.
Looks like that link to AmiNet is just what i am looking for. :-P
Whilst on the subject of WB what are the requirements of amiga OS 3.5? I would get 3.9 but my Amiga is'nt powerful enouth for that, with my lak of memory and accleration:-( Or will i have to make do with amigaOS 3.1 when i upgrade to 3.1 ROMS :-o

AmigaOS 3.1 is an improvement (non cosmetic) over 3.0.
but if you want to anything reasonably worthwhile on a 1200 these days, including upgrade to 3.5 or 3.9, you will need more RAM, and preferably a faster CPU.
this means acceleration !
the minimum requirements for both OS3.5 and OS3.9 are a 32bit processor (which you have: the 68020 in the 1200) and at least 6MB of RAM (2MB of which is the Chip RAM).
it is recommended however, that you have an FPU and a faster CPU, along with at least 16MB RAM for ideal operation.
so this would be something lke an Apollo 68030 / 040 or one of the Blizzards.
the cheapest, I think is good ole eyetech (and probably others) who do the Apollo 1230MkIII - full 68030 clocked to 40MHz with an FPU, and a solitary SIMM slot that will take a 32MB SIMM, while still fitting in the DT case.
however, seeing as you have done a case hack, you have plenty of room for thermals, so might want to consider looking around for a cheap 68040.
try:
Eyetech (http://www.eyetech.co.uk),
Power computing's amiga site (http://www.powerc.com/amiga) and
Analogic (http://www.analogic.co.uk) to name but three.
-
As long as you have the cash, power supply and airflow for it I'd seriously reccomend nothing less than a full 68040/25 for any worthwhile experience these days.
I dunno how the prices compare any more, but the slowest full 040 you can get (25MHz) is roughly twice the speed of the fastest 030 (50MHz) for integer performance. For floating point stuff, the 040@25 is similarly a lot faster than the 68882 external FPU @ 50MHz.
An exception to the rule is floating point code compiled for 68882 that makes heavy use of trancendal maths. The only trancendal function in the 040 is the square root. The overhead of trapping and emulating unimplemented 68882 code wil pull the 040 back but there are programs that can eliminate this (OxyPatcher for one).
If you can afford it, a full 68060 crushes the 030/882 combo :-D

@bhoggett
I only mentioned PSP5 because BouncingAyatollah mentioned it, I forgot that it was a LinuxPC the scafe was using.
Good to see that it works well under Windows emulation :-)
I wonder how well the emulator does bsod's :-P
-
There is a really cheap one about somewhere - they overclocked the 68040 marginally to 28MHz (and a bit ;-) ) which (I believe) vastly simplified the state machine in the interface logic...
... I'll get me coat.

PSP 7 supports batch conversion between formats. Should work fine under WINE.
-
No need to use windows emulators, duh! :-x
Install ImageMagick (propably came with your distribution already). It has a nice commandline image converting utility, simply "convert". It supports tons of formats including IFF and LBM. "man convert" for the docs, of course :-D
