Myspace sucks. It looks cluttered... like websites from 1993. I use Facebook...
-
No.
Don't like those "social networks". I rate them as ways too overhyped
and I like to keep my contacts private.
-
Myspace is the absolute, uncontended, pits.
-
No
-
Yes, myspace.com/em_radiation (See the avatar), but I agree about it being overly cluttered. A large number of my friends' pages take an eternity to load, and due to the free customisation packages available, most pages seem to misrepresent the talents of individuals. And myspace never works correctly - I once tried to upload a short (Not one of these hour long things) video, instead the site just sat on "Processing" for a fortnight or so.
These days I just use it for messages. I used to use the IM, but since it became something you had to download and run on your PC, my IM’ing stopped abruptly.
Hodgkinson.
-
No.
I don't see any special interest in My Space or other social community.
-
What? Where?
No.
Why?
-
But, Amiga.org has a social community...
I only use mine for advertising other things, like the band (a search for the band name got no hits until I linked to it from another page).

Yeah, like when Geocities first went up and everyone had a string of dancing hamsters and a background that made your eyes bleed ...

May I introduce...
teh white mocha (http://www.myspace.com/d_roas)
(Yes, it's pretty much a joke.)

First of all, I agree with every negative comment made about MySpace. It's the worst piece of crap on the net, and nearly every page I go to either takes an hour to load or crashes the PC. It really does remind me of Geocities pages covered in animated gifs. But much worse.
However... I still use it.
I hope it's okay, but I added everyone from this thread to our new MySpace account for Underground Arcade. It's an Amiga games team that we're starting, and the page really doesn't have much on it yet, but we'll add content once we have the time, I just want to get my Halloween game demo finished first.
So, if anyone hasn't added us yet, here's the URL for Underground Arcade - http://www.myspace.com/undergroundarcade/
and my own personal page - http://www.myspace.com/moya_cammy

Aaah... Geoshiitties! Those were the days, a page of animated junk struggling to load in Netscape and some craptastic background MIDI played on the SB16's OPL3 synthesiser!!! Brings a tear to my eye!!!
And no, I'm not a member of any social networking site...

lol, myspace.

Im thinking of it again, since I heard there are offical developer tools afoot.

Social Networking sites ought to be banned.
I did have a profile on MySpace, but it was never used for things other than messages which could have quite easily been sent by email, or for stupid people calling me a {bleep}.
Most of my 'friends' there were people from school who I didn't like (and who didn't like me) so I just deleted it. I couldn't really see much point keeping in contact with them now I have left school.
-
Nope, I'm not all that much into self-glorification.
-
Myspace is well suited for teenage girls.... I'm male and hitting 30 so it's irrelevant to me. It seems every time I follow a link to that garbage heap I hit some kids profile thats blaring with some kind of music and a thousand animated gifs and a mile long drag of boring pictures and crappy comments from and about stuff I don't care about.
Myspace is a visual assault and and auditory disturbance. I do have a profile because one good friend of mine insisted on that being the only way to keep in touch. 6 months later he found a woman and now we talk on the phone like we always have before he decided to utilize myspace.

Myspace, like Facebook, is populated mainly by fawning adolescent girls who feel the need to endear themselves to strangers by showing perfunctory interest in them while bestowing every mind-numbing detail of their own lives upon not only their fellow inhabitants, but also innocent Googlers who then have to trawl through their bilge. Such shining examples of intellect usually describe themselves (with no apparent regard for the actual meaning of the words) as "random", "mad" and/or "bubbly", when in fact "disorganised", "irritating" and "obnoxious" would respectively suit them better.

Originally slated to be a dumping ground for the podcast I never got around to doing. Now I simply use it for complaining about panhandlers, etc.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :roflmao:
TOO TRUE! Mind you, that extends well beyond adolescence, my friend. If you're in your thirties and dating, it's not much different.
I'm too lazy to scan through to see if I already answered this... I have a MySpace page that I put together so I could keep up with my family and cousins (a lot of whom are under 18, so you have to have a profile,) but then found that several colleagues and former high school classmates also have pages. It's a pretty good idea, if you either limit yourself to people you know or have the patience to wade through the drivel.
LoadWB's MySpace Page (http://myspace.com/loadwb)
There's some Amiga-related stuff there, but I took most of my things down as I was preparing to delete the page (long story, not worth telling.) I'm in the process of putting it back up. But I do have a number of my rants there... everyone's entitled to my opinion ;-)
-
I'm not a huge myspacer myself but, for bands its nice to have a page you can setup and have steaming songs with little to no effort until you can get a real website up.
Which I'm still in the process of... (see sig for link)

Someone on a.org has this myspace Scientific Superstar (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=30175220)
Too bad it doesn't have gears scientific on it though, i love that song.

As a musician Myspace works pretty well for me. Its a
pretty easy forum for people that I played with or met
in my travels over the years to find me. People I hadnt heard from in 15 years have reconnected and that seems good for the soul.
Its also pretty well accepted within the music industry
for networking. Wanna write with someone? Need a drummer?
Well, if you dont have one in your friends, someone you
know does.
If you have no use for something like that, OK. But I
really dont know much about fawning adolescent girls. Never
actually dealt with any on myspace.

Bah, should be called WASTEOF(My)Space...
So messy-looking and pretty pointless, I reckon...
Most of what it does can be achieved with an IM and email...
I guess it's just an advertising site which appeals to people who think it's "kewl"... LAME!

Unless family and friends have IM and email addresses which change like underwear, but they all have a web browser.
Really, the idea is quite keen: a single place for pictures, videos, 'blogs (I really hate that term,) in a more passive format than email. My cousins and other family members can browse my page at any time of the day and see what's going on. It really does beat sending emails out to a butt-load of people, some of whose email addresses are no good, or the box is full, etc. This way the effort is on their part: all I have to do is make a quick post, and blammo, done.
As for the advertisements, I never see them. Between AdBlock, FlashBlock, and NoScript, I don't see crap I don't want to see. Makes my MySpace experience, and web experience as a whole, much better.

LoadWB wrote:
'blogs
Eugh, don't get me started on 'blogs. It's bad enough that people feel the need to bombard the Internet with this self indulgent bollox, but does Google really need to return every singly bloody one of them when I'm trying to find something?

Urgh, a shining example why some people shouldn't be allowed to touch design tools.

Well thats just it. I'm a musician not a designer or web designer. what do you expect?
If I had to make a web page from scratch it would look alot worse then that!

Yeah, some peoples pages...click on link...wait 20 seconds...wait another 20 seconds...stare at progress bar chugging away...another 20 seconds goes past...and finally the page appears, bit by bit, whilst some music starts stuttering in the background and my PC tries to cope with the shear amount of useless data on there.
...I think this might be why sites like facebook have suddenly become so popular.
TBH, I did use it once or twice for IM, but since they made it so that you have to download a program...NO THANKYOU! (What was wrong with the old IM???)
That reminds me. What to people make of the new layout when you log in? Personally, I recon it just serves to complicate, confuse, and slow everything down even more.
Enough ranting...Hodgkinson.

Funny story...
I joined myspace a more than a year ago when I opened up one of my private email accounts -- one I use for transacting business on the web -- and found it flooded with hundreds of MySpace messages, including a large amount of "friends" invitations. It turns out that a 16 year old "persian" girl living in California was using my email account as her logon.
Initially, I wasn't sure what it was I was dealing with, I was suspicious that it was some kind of phishing expedition, but eventually figured out what was going on. The only way I could communicate with the girl and ask for my email back was to sign up for myspace, myself. So sign up I did. Unfortunately for me, she didn't want to give up my email address for her logon. MY ADDRESS! Can you believe it? It seems she had "invested too much time setting her page up" and didn't want to bother changing her logon.
Unfortunately for her, since it was my email address she was using, I had access to her password and just about everything else regarding her account. So, I simply hit the "lost password" button and got her password. Now, I could have been a real meanie and changed her password and completely locked her out of her account, but I decided to be nice and, instead, wrote her an email telling her what her password was. Amusingly, she denied that it was hers but then quickly changed it. Naturally, I got an email notifying me that her password had been changed and, once again, informed her what it was.
She finally got the message and tried to change her logon, not once, but several times. Somehow, I just don't think she was getting the problem here. It was my email address, so, everytime she requested a change, I got the an email requesting that she confirm the change before it became official. I finally made it official for her, ending a very long and head-butting experience and freeing my email from myspace tyranny.
I kept my MySpace account, just for the hell of it, and currently use it to keep in touch with younger members of my family. Why not? :)

hey, all you clever myspace people: what is the secret to putting a you tuve video in one's myspace?
I have the code for the you tube. I just want an idea where the heck to put it.
my space is so disorganized it makes me mental.

MySpace has a profile editor that allows you to edit the code of your profile. You can take the "embed" code from YouTube and place it in your profile just as you would were you making an HTML page.

I know about the profile. what I'm asking is WHICH box do i put the code in.

CeCe,
You can put the code in *ANY* box. How it looks, though, is dependent on the box size. Just play with it. You'll be fine. =)

I'm not a designer either, but I'd say losing the background would help a lot to start with. It'd make the page actually readable =).
-
@Odin,
I'm about to put all new songs/material on there so I'm probably going to wipe the whole thing and go back to 2 basic colors.
Maybe put a couple images of our comic and thats it. Back to simple.

one of the MOST annoying things about myspace is all the stupid annoying crap people insist on loading up on their pages.
it's horrible.
I say, keep it simple and clean!

a friend just sent me this:

and I used one of the codes, substituting my own backgrounds
it loads faster than other codes I've tried

I typed in a myspace URL with my Internet username and it turned out I have a myspace too!
I probably signed up and totally forgot about it. :-)
Maybe I should delete the account. I'm not using it anyway, and Google gives an ever-growing number of hits when I type "McVenco" (and all those hits relate to me - how's that for a unique nickname? :-))

People are so stupid I swear, if it was not for Broadband they would be up sh!t creek! Remember back a few years ago when people would try to email a 5MB BMP file on dialup? Well Myspace is full of those people! With a gazillion BMP files, MP3s, AVIs, MPeg videos, etc. It's slow to load pages even with a 1.5MBit connection!

The site belongs to a friend of mine and as he only has dial up I am the one doing the graphics on his site. The idea of having my own my space site would drive me up a wall.
it all seems like it's set up for people who can't figure out how to write html.
the trouble with something being "simple" is that this makes it confusing for me.
