Title: Dataflyer SCSI+ controller in A1200 with OS 3.9
Post by: mbrantley on October 17, 2007, 03:02:38 PM
I am having some trouble getting SCSI going again on my trusty old A1200. Can anyone confirm that a Dataflyer SCSI+ expansion does indeed work with OS 3.9? Any special steps required to get it going?

The 1200, which was purchased new by me early in 1993 (unlike all my other present Amigas, which are classics more recently acquired). For years, it worked well with OS 3.1 with a Microbotics 030 accelerator with 32MB fast ram (no SCSI on that board) and the Dataflyer SCSI+, which plugs into the internal IDE header and adds a SCSI port to the back of the computer. I used to have as many as five external SCSI devices working with this configuration, but now I simply want an external SCSI CD-ROM on there. I have an abundance (well, four) NEC external CD units available.

The 1200 now has 3.1 ROMs, a wireless PCMCIA network card from Amigakit and OS 3.9 installed on the internal 6-gig IDE drive (3 partitions). I installed 3.9 over Parnet using the CD-ROM drive in my 4000.

Now, my SCSI+ problem... The SCSIPlus program from my Dataflyer install floppy seems incompatible with 3.9. IDE drive access hangs or there are read errors after it is run. I found a reference online to using the SKIPROMUPDATES option for scsi.device when running setpatch from OS 3.5. I assume this might be needed for 3.9, so I've tried it with and without that option in my startup-sequence. I've tried running SCSIPlus before and after setpatch. I've tried mounting the CD without running SCSIPlus, but the IDE drive hangs after SCSI is accessed.

Also, I've tried using the ExpXDS.device that's in the 1200 drivers drawer on my original install floppy as well as a Dataflyer SCSI+ install disk I found online as a DMS. The one I found online is a larger file, so it may be newer. No luck in either case.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
