I've had an idea for an invention which I am not capable of developing myself. I don't even know if the technology exists yet. However I feel confident enough that it would be successful were it to be developed that I want to protect the idea. I think a patent is the way to go, but applying for a patent seems to be a minefield. If possible I want to make sure the product is protected worldwide. Has anyone ever done this? I would be grateful for some advice.
TIA

I have, but it was related to my job, so the patent wasn't mine even though I was the 'inventor'. The complete process is long and expensive, but the starting point is fairly painless. I suggest to read up the information provided here. (http://www.ipo.gov.uk/patent/p-applying/p-apply.htm)

Thanks for the link. Will have a read through. I might give the patent office a call tomorrow to see if they can offer any advice.

Would you mind me asking what your invention is for... or perhaps a clue to it's purpose? Not that I want to steal it, you understand! ;-)
You've got me wondering now when you said that the technology might not currently exist. Obviously, if you reply then EVERYBODY will know!!! :-o

I'll tell you once it's patented ;-)

I don't want to discourage you, but I think a patent must be demonstrable. If a non-existant technology is required to demonstrate it, that in itself would be patentable. Certainly get advice from the Patent Office before you start spending money on 'agents'.
