Title: XP or DOpus?
Post by: swift240 on October 09, 2007, 02:03:24 PM
Ok, sitting here with my Athlon using Win XP Pro, then running Amikit with Dopus.
I sat and thought, to be honest I actually like Amikit Dopus better than XP.
Just an opinion, I am not trying to start some tying here.

It seems to be smoother than XP in many ways.
Example in Amikit Dopus Left click I get a window left click again I get another window, easy to copy from one to another or do what ever I need to do, like look in Libs as easy as that.
In XP no chance, and if I need to go to the registery files I need to do a lot of digging to get there compared to an Amiga.

One left click and I am in a window that displays me every thing in one go.
For some reason every application that I run in Amikit Dopus opens a lot faster.
It seems to be more configurable to XP.
Don`t get me wrong XP is good at a lot of stuff but I do compare the both and I rate Amikit Dopus more than XP.
The new version of both WinUAE and Amikit has my vote compared to XP.
Amikit is not perfect but hey, its damed good if you consider how long Windows XP has been out compared to Amikit and WinUAE then Amikit and WinUAE can only get better.

Ok now the Amiga standard or Amikit does need a far better web browser agreed and a full version of a DVD player, but like I say if you see the both XP and Amikit DOpus in action then I give my attention to Amikit DOpus every time.

I say again I am not trying to start any thing here, its just an opinion, how about you?

I've never tried Amikit.  Does it come with Dopus and is Dopus configured in a special way?  Which version of Dopus?

Is there still a possibility to register this software or do you still need to click away that nasty register requester every time? I never really got around to using DOpus 5 and I deleted it from Amikit's user-startup as well, but if it still can be bought/registered I might just try it again.

I still think DOpus4 is one of the best pieces of software ever released on any platform though... :-)

Directory Opus Magellan II is still not available to purchase even though it's listed here (http://gurumeditation.se/product_info.php?products_id=260&language=en). eBay is the only possibility at the moment, unfortunately.

With regards to the DOpus vs XP comparison, there's Windows version of DOpus (http://www.amikit.amiga.sk/directory-opus-9.htm) too which you can test drive for 60 days for free.

There is a serial number for Dopus 5.82 Magellan II.
On the Internet that is available.

Hello:

It's the first time I post in any place on internet, but I see  this interesting.

I bought DOpus for XP, because in the time I use it on Amiga I really love it for the power of its configuration and tools.

I change the Amiga usage for my work. But in the meanwhile, I search for a Windows Explore replace. And finally find DOpus.

I replace Win Explorer totally. In the PCs of my work and my home, I installed DOPUS and don't want to comeback.

Yes, a couple of years ago I spoke to a "PC expert" well thats what she said she was.
She laughed and slagged the Amiga off, in every way possible.  This is a "PC expert" who has never owned an Amiga in her perfect life.  The same "PC expert" who told me that a 486 was a 64 bit computer, (yes we know better)-(but tell her that)
I showed her DOpus 4.16 and Dopus 5.5 Magellan II.
For the first time I seen her mouth shut.
I said no go on you most powerful 400Mhz PC and show me just how your most powerful 400Mhz PC can do all that. (400Mhz was at the time what she had)
She now wont go into any kind of argument with me about the Amiga.
Does that kind off say some thing?

I just love that.

If you ask me, the Windows Explorer UI is, and always has been, awful. The aforementioned DOpus for Windows is almost like transplanting an Amiga soul into a Windows body - an amazing improvement in ease-of-use and user control; a highly recommended purchase.

Well I have tried the trial version of Dopus 8 last year, and that made a major difference on my PC.
I cant afford Dopus on the PC so I use Total Commander thats as near as possible right now.

It does cheer me no end when these PC know it alls say that hey did you know you can get a program called Dopus for the PC, and I say yes and did you know that came out first on the Amiga years ago.
