Title: Need some advice on building a scsi cable...
Post by: pyrre on October 04, 2007, 12:03:19 PM
I need this (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=180&osCsid=aa63aa896bf505d8b8e98ad4f2a2d681) cable. But at the time it is over my budget. (i have used too much this month on my other hobby. RC hobby...)
So i want to build it myself... But i have no wiring diagram...
Can anyone help me there?

I would advise against it. SCSI cables are very strict on tolerances, hence the reason why they are so expensive. They are not simple IDE flat ribbon cables! DIY cables can lead to all sorts of weird errors on the SCSI bus, and thus, ultimately, data corruption.

In other words, save the purchase until the next month, and enjoy your SCSI devices all the better for it.

Internal ZIP drive...??? Jeez. That's so... ancient. Ever since my PC was able to boot from USB memory sticks I've been phasing out all magnetic storage from my computer. I hear parallel quantum wavefront memory technology hasn't been perfected yet, otherwise that noisy thing knows as a hard drive would also be retired with utmost haste.

Either way, perhaps the SCSI FAQ (just type these words on Google) will help you further along. But still, I think it is better for you (and your data) to make puppy eyes to your friend, buy him (or her) a beer, and ask for a final extention of your borrowing his kit.

Support one of the few active Amiga stores!
Buy the cable...

Homemade SCSI cables have always been a source of misery to me!

I bought one, and can vouch that they are good quality.

I wonder exactly how old that A1200 is to which the Zip is connected ;-).

Hi,

My first Amiga 1200 Tower is an EyeTech Tower, (the origonal type) I built 9 years ago.

Tis a Blizzard 1240/40 MHz SCSI 2 Gig Hard Drive, CD ROM and Zip 100, also a catweasel.

It has served me very well and I can swap data to/from me A1 using an external USB Drive and other A1200's with a Squirrel.

Kind Regards, Michael

Of course. My comment was not meant to be derogatory or disrespectful---I had just forgotten there had ever been such a thing as a Zip drive :-P.
