Title: Star Control II on Amiga?
Post by: fragment on July 06, 2003, 03:22:29 PM
Star Control II was never released on Amiga, right? How about porting it from the released 3DO sources? It really doesn't need any fancy new effects or features, just the original game.

There is already a project for windows/linux/BSD/mac/BeOS here (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/). But IMO Amiga version doesn't need any scaling etc so It would work on 020+AGA. I remember the PC version working nicely on my 12mhz 286. The 3DO version also has speech..

Star Control II (and the later 3) was by Accolade, not 3DO - they did a version for 3DO but it's basically identical to the PC version of the same time.  It would be cool to see both those games ported to the Amiga, as both were still largely DOS-based and thus would probably work fine, you are probably right....

here are some other cool STC sites:

(this 3rd link talks of a Mac port - does that mean we could get an AmigaOne version?  :)

(on this last one, check out the humor page with all the funny spoof images, especially of the 'spathi crossing' road sign - too cool!)

I have a LOT of fond memories of that game, but I don't like the updated version at all.

First, they need to package it better.  I installed the sourceforge version of SCII on my computer, and the installation consists of over 16,000 files (mostly PNG images).  It took about a half hour to install on my Athlon 2600+!

Second, the 3DO version is actually quite different from the PC version.  Most small text and icons have been replaced with huge (and ugly) buttons which make the GUI harder to navigate.  If you have fond memories of SCII, I recommend building a legacy computer with a true Soundblaster 16 to play it.  The "updated" version is big, bloated, and not that good, and I doubt it would work well on an unexpanded Amiga.

Sorry, but they didn't make a straight port.  They "improved" it and ruined a lot of stuff, IMO.

I meant the amiga version should be just like the original on PC and no extra fancy stuff (Well ok, maybe the speech could be added but thats it)

Anyone interested starting the project?  :-D

need the source code first, don't you?  maybe send an email to ToysForBob about it?  There may be a reason why the 3DO code (and not the PC source) was released, after all...

I believe Mr. Ford said on his website that they lost the PC code because, quote, "I'm not particularly nostalgic".

Too bad.  I really liked the PC version better.  Even with all the fluff removed (speech, new music, etc.) I doubt a stock A1200 could handle the updated code.  You'd probably have to start from scratch all over again.
