Title: Which Exec?
Post by: AndrewBell on September 24, 2007, 04:56:32 PM
I'm creating a new Kickstart, but unsure whether to use Pirus' Exec 44.1 or the OS3.9 BB2 patched Exec. Are there any major differences between the 2?

I can not provide you any technical information but from what i know, they are much similar and compatible to each other. Exec 44.1 is the fastest.

From memory, and Im sure Piru will correct me here, his exec solves a problem with some versions of cybergrpahix.

I recently did what your about to do.
I found the exec by Piru much swifter.
I would also recommend a read of the guide provided by AmigaMance.
I think I have done almost all that was recommended in that guide, and there is a significant increase in speed on my system.

Ya know, I've never figured out how to switch out my exec.  How does one do it?

Actually it doesn't fix any problem with CGX. It does include separate patcher app to fix bug in older CGX versions, however. The patcher app is also usable with OS 3.9 exec, naturally.

Save the kickstart to disk, split it into the component parts, update files as necessary and then recombine. Tools such as Exec44, Romsplit, Remus and BlizKick contain the necessary docs and patches.

@Piru

As someone who knows the inner workings of Exec quite intimately, what are the differences between your version and the officially patched version?

I don't know exec 45 well enough to be able to comment in detail.

From public documentation I know that exec 45 added some new functions such as NewMinList (totally and utterly pointless addition if you ask me!), and AVL tree routines (again IMO such thing doesn't belong to exec).

Exec 45 does, however, make use of the AVL tree functions in the memory pools (AllocPooled, FreePooled etc), and thus has faster memory pools (at least in certain conditions).

I'm just using the even faster good old 40.68 with BB2(SKIPROMUPDATES "exec.library"), any disadvantage to this combination apart from the obvious slower mem pools (wich in practice don't do much diference anyway) ? Never messed with exec's details much...

Cheers :pint:

 Huh? Faster than Exec 44.1?

On the subject or recompiling Kickstart, is it possible to add a CD-ROM filesystem and mountlist to enable booting from CD? I saw it mentioned in a Google search result but can't find it again.

" Huh? Faster than Exec 44.1?"

Well, I though it was, but then again it's been so long I've read about that I don't even remember well, maybe it was just a comparision between BB2 and 40.68.

Any benchmarks ?
