Subject says it all, I pickued up a immaculate A1200 on CraigsList. White case, clean enough to eat off of.
It has been in storage for 12 years. Well I gues all that time fused the IDE cable to the motherboard, Because I could not for the life of me get it to release then pop...

What are my options here. I've desoldered components from motherboards before and can resolder a header. Has anyone been through this?

Sounds like you just answered your own question :-P I suppose you just need to find a 44 pin header. Sounds like your soldering skills are pretty good if you managed to get the broken one off. Maybe you can find a dead A1200, A600 or something else with a 44 pin header and remove the connector from that?

Just did a test on a 2.5 to big ide hard drive converter. I was able to desolder the header with a desoldering braid.
For those of you trying this. Use a good clean tip on the iron, and a clean braid, don't be stingy and re-use areas or the braid.
The worst thing you can do is lift one of the threads or grommets embedded in the motherboard. This happens if you have a cheap soldering iron with inconsistent heat on the tip or if you leave the tip in too long.
Going to try to remove the A1200 header, got to get a new cable and header at a computer show.
Will post shots in the tutorial area.
I will say, those of you that want to solder your own Mini-Mig are in for some nail bitting, nerve wracking time unless you work in a surface mount equipped electronics/ machine shop.

Exactly what I didn't want to happen just did. Two traces lifted off the topside of the motherboard. One of the sockets for the pin just wore away under the head of the soldering iron.
I have done lots of xbox stuff and have been able to reconnect these traces before, but it's pot luck.
I did get all the pins out, it figures that this happens on the last 2 pins.
There was aparently some solder still in there despite 30 minutes of heating the area to lif out the pin.

Grab a PeeCee IDE cable, stripe one of the 40 wires with a blade(but keep the insulation)Follow the broken trace to the nearest exposed point (amiga side), then solder a patch from the first available exposed part of the connector to where it should be reaching to.
Never mind the performance, It isn't the UDMA133 of the modern PC but one of the first IDE implementations to refer to the standard! thus, long clear wires are unlikely to do harm. Even if worried, remove 3 wires instead of one, use the center wire to carry data then ground the 2 external at both sides.
Have done this before- worked as a charm.
Ah, and use a desoldering pump to remove excessive solder next time!

Tried this, the machine boots off of floppy, not hd. Now the mouse port doesnt really work. I can left and right click but no movement. Time to order a new MB fom amiga kit. Any suggestoins?

You could always use the FastATA interface instead.

For future's sake, if anyone else experiences the same, only replace the pins that are broken.. No point in unsoldering and resoldering the ones that are still good.
A friend of mine snapped two edgemost IDE pins off his A1200 mobo, so I just removed the stubs, used a desoldering pump + braid to clean out the holes and then stuck in and soldered two pins I took off a suitably sized pin strip.

well what did you expect after 30 minutes of heating?
IIRC there are some unused pins in IDE cable, hope you had checked pinout..

The male header on the 12 was such a hassle I placed a female header on there and soureced a genber changer, this way any future stress would be placed on the gender changer, connenctor soldered to the motherbvoard. This way if any future pins brea? Bam, just pop in a new header...
At least in theory...
Anyone want a A1200 motherboard for use with a tower conv or Mediator 1200 or just plain parts harvesting? Provided of course you have a scsi controller on the accelarator for hard drive access.
