Title: Genesi to make a 'proper' computer...
Post by: Everblue on September 19, 2007, 02:56:39 PM
From BBRV's blog:

Tsinghua University in Beijing is China’s leading research institution, and one of the leading research universities in the world. A company was formed to commercialize the vast stream of technology innovations and inventions flowing from the university’s laboratories: Tsinghua Tongfang Co., Ltd (Public, SHA:600100).

THTF is one of the world's largest CE and PC manufacturers

THTF and Genesi will develop a family of consumer oriented products that bring the latest advantages offered by Freescale System-on-a-Chip (SoC) technology together with the Internet and enhanced communication networks to deliver rich media content and a suite of interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on or off-line. THTF will manufacture the products for distribution in China and internationally. THTF and Genesi will build on the developer and user communities that have developed around the successful EFIKA platform. THTF will bring the first three retail products (Personal Computer, Pad and TV) and associated marketing support to 8000+ consumer electronic and personal computer stores throughout China in 2008.

 :-o

Let's begin with speculation :D

1. How much will it cost?
2. What specs does it have?
3. What operating system will it come with? (MorphOs please!)
4. How big (small?) will the physical size be?

1) It's not an Amiga (edit : it won't run AmigaOS, and probably not even morphos)
2) It's Bill Buck,
3) Who cares?

Well if it runs MorphOs, many will be interested.

Hmmmm ok, a proper computer, now that can mean any thing.

Amiga compatible?
MS compatible?
Linux compatible?

Just how does one determine a "proper" computer, in what way?

A proper computer that runs a word processor?

This is very open indeed.

WE can all say what a proper computer is and we can all be different about it.

Mike.

Well, I came up with the term 'proper' in this case. I meant a complete computer, you know, comes in a case, with a hard disk and video card, OS pre-installed, etc. Complete for consumer use.

You can call it whatever you like, but surely I didn't start this thread to discuss if its a proper computer or not

Well I can only go by what you put down here.
But it is a good question any way.
How do we determine what a proper computer is?

My idea is a computer (yes ok sound card, gfx card ethernet card all normal stuff) but with a chip on board that can emulate any thing you throw at it, to get what you want.

Is this impossible I wander?

I don`t mean a computer with MS XP on it emulating an Amiga machine, I mean a computer that is empty of any OS, but it has the ability to run virtually any OS.

I can see this is going to start something here, in another thread.

Mike.

if it doesnt run MOS or AOS, not many in the Amiga world will care.

@Everblue,

"Let's begin with speculation"

Let's NOT PLEASE!!!

When it is available for sale, has already been shown and tested and reviewed by an Amiga user, runs either AmigaOS, or MorphOS, can demonstrate some kind of advantage over the options that are already commercially currently available, then I MAY show some interest in such a computer product.

MiniMIG is far more interesting and it is real and here now.  Let's expand on it and see where it leads.

If it will run MOS, I'd at least have a look. Lord knows retirement age is likely to reach me before a commercial AOS does based on historical progress.

knowing my luck on the day that I die, it will be the day after that some one comes out with a full Amiga up to date computer.
Sitting on a cloud looking down at it, or sitting on a hot shovel looking up.

teeny tiny rant...

I'll read a review but wouldnt buy anything that has a operating system designed by "elitists" who get it running "when its done".

If I'm going to pay for a mobo that will support AOS or MOS and they get a few $ from my purchase, I expect, err I DEMAND updates and news on a REGULAR BASIS.  You work for ME and MY MONEY.  Prove it to me that YOUR OS is worth me wasting my money on your .

rant off..

I agree with a lot of what you say, after all its our money isnt it.
And if they are smart then they will give us what we want, not what they want to sell.

I take it we are the customers arent we?

Sell what the public want not what they think we want.

No not again!!

What was that last board Genesi produced that we all had to hear about over and over and over again that had NOTHING to do with AmigaOS like operating systems??    How many LINKS to BLOG posts about the "Future" of Amiga that "EFIKA" was delivering did we have to see??

Efika.  Never had MorphOS.  Now it's no longer in production.

Genesi.  BELIEVE!

I completly agrees with amigadave. Please stop disturbing me whit non available products. Anyway minimig is an interesting product, but currently it replaces only a500 and similar. So if it replaces one day an a1200 or more, then will be VERY usable and interesting.

*yawn*

Wake me up when there is a product. In the mean time, DUDE I'm GETTING A DELL.

I think we must focus, minimig is a "16-bit solution". Maybe in the future there will be a minimig 2 that focuses in being a "32 bit solution", but please do not downplay minimig because it does not run aga/32 bit applications, it is like saying "When motorcycles have 4 wheels, THEN it will interest me".

I am very much interested in the minimig..enough to where I'm on the first batch to pay $120 for a fully assembled mini mig.  I'm hoping to put it in my car for the kids to play games on :)

I would just like them to make an OS for the computer that I have already purchased from them.

I'm told they are working on a 'Lightning fast OS', my computer already seems to have the proper parts, heh.

my 2 cents

If it's a good product then frankly I couldn't give less of a toss.

2) It's Bill Buck,

You're entitled to your opinion of Bill and his operation like anyone else. I for one have no issue with him. He's controversial, I'll even admit he's said and done some stupid stuff, but frankly all I care about is what the company produces and their last 2 hardware products (PegII and EFIKA) have both been great.

Quote
3) Who cares?

A lot of people, many of whom are or used to be part of the Amiga community, but we want to actually *do* something rather than sit around bickering, hurling abuse and rotten eggs, and waiting for something that's never going to happen.

Because of Genesi and EFIKA I've done some fun stuff over the past 6 months and learnt stuff I'd never have bothered to have learned about Linux otherwise. That's exactly the spirit that the Amiga had all those years ago - computing should be fun and interesting - not just some shallow consumer experience like Mac or Windows (and that's from someone who regularly uses both). The platform is different, and the OS is different but the spirit and the principals remain the same. Computing because it's fun, not because I need to.

We're doing constructive stuff and having fun. We're not paying 600 quid for an obsolete piece of hardware and an OS that's not finished (I don't care how final it claims to be) and not even legally licensed any more (allegedly), or waiting for hell to freeze over and Bill McEwan to skate to work.

I have Classic Amigas because they are fun and I enjoy the nostalgia. Good luck finding either in any new so-called Amiga with OS 4, or 5 or whatever other BS McEwan comes out with this week. because I really struggled to find anything meaningful in OS4/A1, and so have other dedicated Amiga people I know.

The future of 'Amiga' is in the hands of a bunch of robbing IP whores who like making themselves look good, and a software company who's lack of morals challenge that of most of history's military dictators. I'll be the first to be surprised and amazed when something good *does* happen, but I'd get used to the blank radar - you'll be staring at it for a looooong time...
