Title: Best emulation fon a 233 MHz Pentium
Post by: persia on September 17, 2007, 08:52:57 PM
Hi,

I have an old 233 MHz pentium laptop (a toshiba 320cdt) which is basically too slow to be useful for a Microsoft OS.  So I was wondering if I could turn it into a portable Amiga using emulation or whether it's too slow for that as well.  What would be the best choice Amlithon? Amiga XL? UAE on WIndows 98?  UAE on Linux?  X-Amiga?

Thats probs far too slow indeed.. Maybe it will run uae dos or winfellow, but with no sound and a lot of frames skipped... maybe workbench will load.. games would be far too slow.

dos fellow for games should work although you will have to turn stuff down- screen resolution, audio frequency etc.
for workbench stuff use winuae with audio turned off, and definitely use uaegfx with picasso96 for video.
i have a 233 compaq presario that i use sometimes. i used to have a 180mhz presario that worked ok too but games were too much in winuae.
newer versions of winuae with jit turned on and tuned might work ok. make sure you dont use and graphical filters and keep your audio frequency turned down or off if you dont need it.

It should run quite a few games ok under dos fellow at least. I recall using dos fellow myself on a same spec laptop, and it worked ok. Dont even try winuae though, as that will just be way too slow to be usable for anything.
I recall even running demos like 9 fingers and state of the art on it.

Unfortunately, too slow to emulate much of anything other than  a paperweight.  I have a couple old laptops in much the same situation.  :-(  Running an earlier version of WinUAE helps some, but then you get all the bugs and quirks of an early version of WinUAE, with all the desktop performance of an A500, if you're lucky.

233MHz will run DOS fellow at a good speed.

The Atari ST emulator PacifiST will also work well.

What's the performance difference between a 233 Pentium and a 550 mHz PIII? Roughly - I realize that's a vague issue... But I run UAE under Win98 on the latter. It runs well enough to play the more simple games like Populous, even with sound.

When I used a 233 Pentium (actually a K6-2) it would run UAE but was not fast enough for sound.

If you want to play Amiga500 games use "Fellow". The old MS-Dos version was quite fast even on old machines like a P233.

If you want to use the OS you could try out Amithlon but I doubt your gfx card is supported correctly.

AmigaXL sucks, it's just UAE on top of QNX.

You could also try to fine tune WinUAE to run OS friendly apps, but don't expect it to be very fast. Use separated configurations for games and OS friendly stuff.

you can try with amithlon..maybe with 040 or 060 speed..
