I was given an old A500 with a 1084 monitor. The monitor is dead.
Looking for the least expensive option to get a working display. (Something better than the greyscale composite output). I head of the A520, but I don't have / can't find one. Is there something I can build to interface between the 23-pin video port and a NTSC TV? All I want to do is play a couple old games!
Thanks.

I saw somewhere a project to add S-Video (SVHS) to an A1000. I'd bet that the process would be similar in the A500, if you feel like a little hardware hacking.
I used to use an old Genlock to get composite video out of my 500. An A520 would probably be best to use, though you might have a hard time finding one not part of a system.
I picked up an A520 from a storage shed that I'm not sure works. I'll test it out and clean it up. PM me sometime this week to check in if you haven't found something else already.

Try finding some genlock on eBay. It should give you S-Video out...

There are a couple threads over at the EAB about building a s-video adapter.
Video of a neobitz board build/install in an A1000. (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=29181)
Thread about building your own board, with schematics, board layouts amd pics. (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=30752) The parts cost about $20, and the picture quality is far superior to an A520.

i have two A520's and other amiga items.. I'll dig through my stuff to see what i can clear out and post a for sale thread. you'll have first shot at the A520.. I'd be asking $25/each + shipping for one.

PM ME, I have a Neriki desktop Genlock, I just got a Amiga 1200 so I Cant test it again. It outputs a nice clean composite signal and has a fader control in a rack mount case. This unit will take the RGB video and convert it to color composite.
Please PM me if youre interested

If your TV can cope with S-Video I'd get a genlock; they run for ~$5 on ebay if you're lucky. The quality is somewhat close to RGB, composite - esp. with A520 - is disgusting.

Did you check to make sure the switch on the 1084 is in the RGB position? It may not be dead.

A-520 Amiga 500 television adapter and video adapter
Used A520 RF modulator for A-500. Has TV & video output. This is a television adapter for the Amiga 500.
Yep Old amiga software still has a few as well ...
Still the poor mans best bet for getting signal to a TV st..
Make sure its the NTSC and not pal flavored ones...

Hi,
you can add a SVideo output to an A520.
But you can also get your A1084 repaired too.
H.R. make some compatible Flyback transformer, and the other parts are quite standard !
-
Errrm, what about the 23-pin Video port to SCART adaptor on amigakit.com? (Assuming your TV has SCART...)
Surely pure RGB signals has got to be the highest possible quality way of doing it.
Hodgkinson.

Wow, thanks for the replies!
Several of you have PM's. Sounds like the quickest way to get up an running is the A520 or the Genlock, with the Genlock being the higher quality option.
My 1084 is on its way to be repaired, I'm pretty sure its dead. The lights dim when I plug it in... Checked fuses and such but thats about the extent of my monitor repair abilities.
Couple of other notes I've collected:
TV's in the US don't have SCART - at least I've never come across one that did.
oldsoftware.com is out of A520's.
You can't make a direct A500 to SVGA adapter (but can on the A1000, and 1200).

Re SCART ... Ah. Thought that might be the case (Im in the Uk...Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs...Hmmm)
What video connector standard do you use over the pond? Maybe such a cable as those on amigakit could be converted to your connector system?
Theres loads of info out on the web about both A500 video and standard video connectors.
Hodgkinson.

Across the pond only RCA (composite), S-video or component (not RGB compatible), if I'm not mistaken.
-
The TA-1 (from Atari ST) is similar and very compatible with the A520, and can be easily converted.
But, IMO, the best way is build a S-VHS converter (neobitz) to use in any Amiga.

As much as I dislike eBay, 520 units show up there cheap quite often. Just make sure you buy from a U.S. seller so you get an NTSC unit. I thought I had one left, but apparently I traded off my last one...
I wish you luck.
