Title: Trnasferring files from PC to Amiga using parallel cable?
Post by: BGary335 on September 11, 2007, 04:24:28 PM
Is it possible to transfer files from the PC to the Amiga using a parallel cable instead of a null modem serial cable? I've read that it is possible, but I've never tried it. Also, if it can be done, how does one go about doing it? I have no null modem serial cable, or for that matter any other way of getting files to the Amiga at this point, so this is sort of a last ditch effort.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes it is possible, and  I have used it successfully in the past.

I used some software called Am2PC, a quick search should find it. I think it should be on Aminet as well.

Only thing is that it only works on Windows pre XP.

Great,I happen to have an older PC laying around somewhere, so I should be fine. I have the PC2Amiga program, though I've never used it before so I really have no idea what to do. Can you tell me how to set everything up?

I'll try my best. Its been a while since I used it.

I think you should have 2 sets of files, those for the Amiga and those for the PC. It should be simply a case of copying one set to a directory on the PC, and the other to the Amiga.

Then there should be 2 executable files on each machine. I think you run the PC one first, and then the Amiga one. There is a question at the begining asking what cable you want to use.

If you don't get any errors then you should be ready to go. I think you can then simply browse the PC's drives via an icon created on the Amigas desktop.

Just remembered - I think there are 2 config programs to run before hand. These should just let you setup the cable type.

I'm still confused about one thing-how does one get the Amiga's config files TO the Amiga?

Tried CrossDOS?

I don't have it. I've been practically pleading over in the Marketplace board for either that or a version of Workbench that includes it.

IIRC PC2Amiga doesn't work on Win2000 either.

Warning, parallel port can be easily damaged, I had problems with PC2Amiga on parallel.

There is some program written in  Basic for transfer, check aminet

The idea of transferring just isn't going to work because I don't have CrossDOS or any similar program (or an OS that comes with it) at present, and it doesn't look like I'm having very much luck finding anyone who can give me a copy of such a program (I mean that literally by the way-I'll take a copy-it doesn't have to be an original disk, I don't care).

Sorry. I didn't realise you had no way to get any files to the Amiga.

Well, with any luck hopefully some generous person here will come forward with a copy of CrossDOS, or WB 2.1.

No need for CrossDOS, you can use MSH: from Aminet - if somebody would send it to you on an Amiga floppy.

Disclaimer: I wrote MSH: so I naturally think it is the best :-)

There is a way to get the first files from PC to Amiga

See Here ! (http://adfsender.stoeggl.com/adfsenderterminal/methods.html)

Please read my post (which you quote), or perhaps read these instructions. Or read both.

Are your serial ports not working?

The ports are fine. Its the cable that I don't have.

 Just a tip: parallel communication programs works with Win2000/NT/XP, but they need a "patch" in order to work.

 The patch program is called "userport", and can be downloaded from here (http://www.eletronica.org/arquivos/userport.zip).

 1- unzip it somewhere in the peecee;

 2- Copy the archive UserPort.sys to directory c:/windows/system32/drivers (or c:/winnt/system32/drivers in Windows NT);

 3- Execute the program UserPort.exe;

 4- Change the adress to 0x378-0x37A, clicking in "ADD";

 5- Remove the other adresses with the button "Remove";

 6- Click on "Start".

Is building the cable out of the question?  It isn't difficult, even if you have no soldering experience.  In fact, you could simply cut up un-used cables (that have the correct ends, of course) and marry them into a null modem cable.  Simply check your work for correct continuity, and ensure that wires can not touch each other or come undone.

You may even find one for sell.

 BTW, here (http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/3-105.html) is the link to Cloanto's "hot to make your own serial cable" (in case you want to make the serial cable).

I really appreciate everyone's help, but I really think that I'm going to go with an A1200 instead of trying to somehow get files over to the A500. I'm selling all my current Amiga stuff (check my A1200 thread in the Marketplace for details on exactly what is for sale), and I'll just use that money toward the 1200. I have my eye on a couple that are currently on Ebay, so hopefully I'll be able to snag one of them.

I understood that you want to use a parallel connection to transfer files between PC and Amiga. But for doing that, you first need to transfer some Software from PC to Amiga. With a Nullmodem cable, you can do that even if you only have a Workbench Disk. After you have transferred a connection Software, you can use your parallel cable.

BTW, a NullModem Cable is not expensive. In Germany you can buy a new one for 1,50 Euro.

Well, if you change you mind, I managed to find my old WB2 disks. They're no good to me. If you want them, they're yours for the cost of postage from Oz.
