Title: Remote amiga software?
Post by: spihunter on September 06, 2007, 01:29:39 AM
Hey All,

I was wondering if there were ever any kind of remote desktop software for controlling an Amiga from a PC.

I bought the Siamese RTG system years ago but my CD is now unreadable.

I scanned Aminet with no luck.

cheers

edit -- actually, maybe not, this may only be amiga -> PC.

edit#2 -- Looks like it should be possible using VNC. (http://twinvnc.free.fr/Liens.php?menu=09&lang=eng)

I think a VNC server is your only option. Look for AmiVNC.

Suppose you could run Linux (or Amix?) on the Amiga and use standard Unix network based remote stuff, but that's probably not what you're after hehe...

I think it might matter if the other end is going to be a PC or another Amiga.

I just got the full versions of RDesktop (68k, OS4, MOS) after having donated 25 Canadian $ to the project.

I want to use it just the other way round: for controlling my XPpro-PC from my Amiga 4000 PPC.

As far as I understood the manual, RDesktop just works to control a PC from the Amiga side - monitor, keyboard, mouse and sound are redirected.

For controlling the Miggy from the PC you will need VNC, as someone already mentioned, but this does not support sound redirection, AFAIK.

Currently I'm still trying to open a connection successfully - all I get up to now is "Connection Refused".
 :cry:

EDIT 11-SEP-07:
Connection successfully established - everything is working fine!

Actually the only thing that would do this is Siamese RTG.
It retargets graphics to a window on a Windows98-PC (and also a WindowsNT PC after hours of fiddling) and works great for everything that is, well - RTG. ;-)

I also have the CD, but sadly it is also unreadable.

I noticed that the CD has no scratches whatsoever and has been burnt to one of those el-cheapo green CD-Rs that roamed the world in the late nineties.

Does anyone have ANY idea of how the data on this disk could be saved - or is Siamese RTG lost forever?

Also, does anyone have this software??
And would you be willing to share it with us unfortunate people with broken CDs?!
 :-?

Thanks for your thought everyone.

@Matt_H,

I looked at the docs for AmiVnc and it seems that my 030/aga A1200 might be a bit slow for this. I'm still going to give it a shot.

@Unit21,

Yep, My CD is also one of those cheapo green CD-R's. It sucks because I know I paid well over $100 for it back in 99'. I just won another copy off ebay that I'm waiting for. If it still works I'm going to burn multiple copys of it. Maybe I could put it up on my web site so unfortunate folks could get a new copy?. Not sure if thats illegal or not since the author abandon it long ago?

There is no such thing as abandonware.

It would be legal only after the copyright has expired. It depends on the country, but usually it is about 70 years after the death of the author.

Obviously you could try getting permission from the copyright holder(s) to redristribute the software.

Which in all likelihood is well after the media holding the software has expired.

...a thought for another topic I suppose.

For the country I live in, good old Norway, it would be legal for me to obtain an unmodified copy of what was originally on my CD. Yaaaaay for Norway!  :-D

So if someone here can make it available for me I would be happy to supply this person with my SiameseRTG-serial, pictures of myself smiling with the original CD in my hand and of course handsome pay for the cost of distributing the software to me... :-)

On a not completely unrelated matter, does anyone know if the original SiameseRTG people exist?
I could shoot them an email or even a phonecall if it would get me a new CD with the Software.

@All,

Maybe if my new copy works I could make it available only to people that can prove to me that they have a legit copy?.

I've paid for it twice now! :-?

I distinctly recall having used my Amiga from uni with a VNC client, I'll be damned if i can remember the name of the Amiga VNC server though.

@Unit21

Let me clarify:

IMO morally spihunter has every right to obtain copy to replace his bit-rotten media. However, I don't know if it's legal for him to do so (For example USA and EU have some really dumb laws these days.. nothing to do with moral).

Redistributing the software would be illegal, however (unless if permission was obtained).

@Unit21,

It still requires a 68040 or greater though  :-(

Reason to upgrade my A1200? :-P

@Piru

I know!
The US, and to a lesser extent the EU, both have some dumb laws regarding copyright and DRM.

In Norway however the law on copyright is distinctively different on one point. When you have bought digital content you own that content. This does not mean that you own the rights to the software, but you DO own the ones and zeros that make up the content on the CD, DVD or whatever other medium it was distributed on.
Therefore any EULA for the Norwegian market can only limit the usage of said content.
You are also allowed to make backups for personal use, and, in the case of "entertainmene content", share these backups with your friends. (No, Really!!)

The bottom line is:
If I buy a CD and scratch it by accident I am in my full right to download the music off any website I see fit.
(That was really pinpointing it, but you get the idea...)

I don't actually know how things work in the EU, but this is the case for Norway, at least for now!

And, for the record, I make a point out of breaking anti-piracy and copyright-laws as little as possible. ;-)

I am curius how fast VNC is when accessing you Amiga from a PC?

I have all the right hardware here (060/PPC/B-CvisionPPC) but not time to test right now.

Anyone got some feedback on 4col WB or Glowicon WB in 32 colors and VNC?

Thanks!

I recieved my new Siamese 2.5 CD in the mail last night that I won off ebay. I put it in my MacBook and it came up on the desktop, but everytime I try and copy something off of it it just gets "stuck" in the middle of the transfer.

I'm afraid that this CD is on the brink of death. I tried it in my PC with the same results. I was able to launch one of the .exe files on my PC with succses though.

Anybody know of any good freeware cd salvage programs for the Mac/PC? :boohoo:

Paul Nolan seems to be alive and well in California, you could try asking him:

Although even Photogenics for the Amiga is not mentioned anymore :(
