Post by: hamtronix on September 04, 2007, 12:20:08 PM
Apparently I have a non-ECS Denise in my system. I want one. If anyone has one for sale please let me know!

Not at all!  This guy has been trying to sell some way over priced Amiga software/hardware and I suspect he is wondering why nothing is selling at the moment!

d_l_p =  :insane:

$3,000 for a C64 sounds like a bargain.

EBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/COMMODORE-EDUCATOR-64-VERY-RARE-AWESOME-MACHINE_W0QQitemZ300145212673QQihZ020QQcategoryZ74945QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

"Thanks and God bless!" this guys' ebay ad says. LOL! I think he has spent a little too much time in church seeing how he thinks he can get $200 for that floppy.

that person is either very foolish or very greedy. That is also one of the Commodore copmuters you could actually destroy by entering in one line of code.

I think I'll ask him what the result of the magic poke is. I'll tell the guy I need him to do it in order to determine the rom version or something, lol.

Isn't that just an urban myth?

No idea. For 3 grand, though, I'd expect it to do more than sit there and decompose, like go and get my dinner.

Killer Poke!

Oh and again if anyone has an ECS Denise for sale please let me know!

That d_l_p guy has been selling off stuff from that "Commodore-Amiga service man back in the day" for a looooooooooooooong time. Usually with absurd prices. Sometimes when I see his listings with a "Make an offer" button, I'll make a reasonable offer just to let him know he's a fooktard... he was selling some old Ultima game for like $300 so I made an offer of $10. I might offer $50 for that Educator 64.

That killer poke seems to apply to PETs, the Educator 64 is in a PET case, but its just a regular C64 inside. Maybe a bit modified, but, its not a PET.

Anyway...

Is upgrading a non-ECS Denise to the full ECS one really worth it? ECS doesn't seem particularly advanced relative to OCS. I'm just wondering if there's really a worthwhile cost-benefit ratio here.

I cant imagine the chip would cost more than 10 bucks. And to get my A2000 to the ECS is priority!

Got no Hires Denise (for sale) but the Educator 64 was just a repacked (serviced) C64 mobo with a slightly modified ROM - I doubt you could damage it with a 'magic poke'.

I once destroyed an Apple ][ by that method though....

I just went to Softwarehut and ordered one through them. 9$ hopefully shipping wont kill me. I wish they would just send it by regular post as it would cost 41 cents...

They pop up frequently on German ebay. You'll have a difficult time finding one for $10 though, $25 is more like it.

cheers

Why is that priority? I thought the main thing that would get you is a bit of a boost in chip RAM... and if you've got a decent accelerator with plenty of RAM on it, what does having a full ECS Agnus get you?

Well it would get me a FULL ECS MACHINE!! Woo Hoo. Not some half OCS/ECS mutant variant Amiga which apparently I now possess. Oh I got another FD today!

In any case it is a chance to open my case and pull out a chip put another in and hopefully not blow it up. And also it will get those other elusive monitor modes to show up. I can't trust a computer that doesn't show me what I know I should see.

Also I need more RAM. If anyone has a RAM expansion daughterboard for the A2630 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know! (and maybe the rocket to increase my accelerator...)

Man I love mucking about.

Hmmm... I'm skeptical that your missing monitor modes are due to your Agnus chip. I suppose its cheap enough to upgrade it. I don't really see the big deal though. ECS isn't really that different from OCS... not even remotely the improvement AGA is over OCS/ECS.

With the 1200 I have now having a good accelerator with plenty of RAM, an IDE splitter and a flicker fixer, I'm kinda wondering if there's even really a need to keep the 2000 around haha.

The 2630 needs a daughterboard for RAM? Wow, that sucks. Both the accelerators I've had on my 2000 had SIMM slots right on the board.

I'm skeptical too but what the hell.

You could sell your 2000 to Doomy for 500.00$ (american dollars)I'm sure he'd jump right on it. ;)

Yeah I had to get rid of my accelerator that plugs into the 68000 pinout the A2630 popped up so what the heck. Its a slot loader so it means more stuff to look at when I open the case. But it cut down my RAM from 40 Megs to 10MB ( 8 MB + 2 MB chip)... That kind of blew.

If I decide to sell my 2000s (or even just one of them, main reason I havent is shipping something that big is a pain) I'll send you a PM and see if you want one of my accelerators.

Hires Denise has nothing to do with the amount of chip RAM.
To be able to use ECS modes, an ECS Agnus (>=1 MB chip RAM) is also required.
