Hi all,
I am just trying to get my A1200 out of retirement, I power it up, and the HD is dead. I look everywhere for my Workbench 3.0 disks, and I cannot find them. is there anywhere I can download or borrow a copy of the disk?
If I can find someone to borrow me a good harddrive with Workbench on it, is there anyway I can copy it onto my drive?
Any help would be appericated.
Alan.
P.S. If I am posting to the wrong forum I apologize.

It's quite a shame you didn't backup your Original Worbench disks...
Because if you -="borrow"=- someone elses disks you'd be considered a software pirate... So either you must try harder to find them or you must go and buy them again...
Why not upgrade to OS3.9 while your at it :-?
If you haven't got a CD-ROM drive yet then you'll have to stick with WB3.1 ;-)
And By The Way...
Welcome to Amiga.org
Check this site at os.amiga.com:
For a list of dealers (http://os.amiga.com/dealers/index.php)
-
And whats even worse is that he would have no way to turn the downloaded files
into bootable Amiga-disk, without having an Amiga (booted in to WB) or some
special HW (CatWeazle) in his PC.
-
The piracy issue aside, (if you own an A1200, I don't really think getting new copies of the 3.0 install disks is a problem) if you happen to mention where you are, some good soul geographically close to you might offer you some help.

Copyrights can be a pain in the ass type of thing. eBay (http://www.ebay.com) may be your best bet :-(

maybe it isnt dead! maybe everything is alright!
Let me explain,
When things got really bad with the Amiga scene, I left computing altogether
for some years. Eventually I decided to return,
I switched on my A1200 and it was non functioning.
I kept trying things and gave up, I went out for some reason,
when I returned I found I had left the computer on for some hours.
Switched it off, later switched it on and everything was fine.
It booted off the hard disk fine.
What had happened is that some rechargable battery inside had run flat.
By leaving the machine on for some hours the battery had got
recharged fully and it could boot properly.
A year or so later I hadnt been able to use my A1200 for some months.
I turned it on and no action, this time I remembered,
so I deliberately left it on for some hours,
and sure enough everything was fine.
So possibly this may be the problem,
just leave the machine on for say 12 hours,
switch it off and then on
if you are lucky it may boot.
In both of the above cases of flat battery, instead of directly booting,
the v3.0 rainbow insert-disk image appeared which doesnt
happen usually. That image was so depressing when I didnt know it
was merely a flat battery.

Wait a minute guys...if he bought his A1200 new,
isn't he entitled to use the 3.0 OS that came
with it, instead of buying a brand new set of
disks? If somebody copied him the disks I
wouldn't say that's piracy if he already
purchased the right to use the OS.
Regardless...the disks are cheap anyway if
you end up buying them.

As whoosh777 said, it may not be dead. If you leave it on for a while and it still doesnt work, try removing the hard disk and shake it rapidly in a cirular motion laterally around the centre. I had the exact same problem and turned out the rotors had ever so slightly seized and simply needed to be shaken into action again. After that, every now and then it wouldnt boot from cold, but would work after a warm boot while on. Had to simply press amiga+amiga+ctrl when i got the purple screen.
re: pirating. I guess so long as you bought it new and have not transfered you WB licence by using amithlon/UAE etc etc you would still be entitled to install the same WB back on it from any source. But im no lawyer...

I'm sorry, but I think this is a complete load of rubbish, but it's the way most software vendors would like you to think, because it means more money for them.
If you legally own a copy of a piece of software, and the media it came on dies for some reason, what the hell is the problem with replacing that media with a copy from someone else? Has the company who produced the media promised you a long-long guarantee that it will produce you another set if that set dies?
What about years ago when the shop my dad bought my first Amiga from, when the Workbench disks died, we were given free copies of them? Ok, so they didn't have pretty labels on, and if the shop wanted to, they could charge us for their time and materials used.
To me, what you're saying is tantamount to "you're not allowed to perform maintenance on what you bought from a company".
-
Do you have any of the later Amiga Format cover CDs? These had a complete set of WB3.0 disks on them.

@mikeymike
IMO there is a big gap between common sense and piracy. There are alot of people out there (Amiga Inc fans) who would love nothing more to jump all over you for piracy, and look only strictly at the letter of the EULA. Given I have no idea what C=ommodore's Eula was, but I know how Amiga inc views the matter, even though AI is a tiger with no teeth.

Considering, well according to someone here anyway, it was on the Amiga format CD every month, I doubt there was any license agreement at all. The ROM chip/image was probably the legal point.
It all comes down to 'fair use', but that term is very broad. For example, you could buy a toaster, dismantle it, and use the outer shell as an ornament. It's your toaster to do that with. However, there's a 'right and wrong' issue here.
Personally, I would consider it right/fine/ok that you could use your legally obtained ROM image (from your own amiga) and legally obtained WB disks (again from your own Amiga) and use them in UAE. You're using what you bought for your own purposes.
I would also consider it right/fine/ok to keep an infinite number of copies of the WB disks, provided you kept them somewhere where other people can't get hold of them.
However, for example, Microsoft has a problem with people having more than one backup of the software after installation, let alone the installation media. Most business users have an issue with this, say for example servers with tape backup. Microsoft considers it illegal to make a copy of the install CD.
Microsoft also considers it illegal for someone to buy a copy of Windows, use it on one machine, wipe that machine completely and sell it, then use the same copy of Windows to install onto another machine. Why? Because having to buy a new copy of Windows for a replacement machine means more money for them. Also according to MS it is illegal to sell a machine without an operating system on it.
-
With Microsoft, aren't you just buying the license key? Particularly with XP, I'm surprised they'd care at all if you make a copy of the disk because you can't "activate" the product without the key.

Ehm... Mikey... Would you send me a registered copy of Quake or Napalm CD's if I told you mine was broken and I'd accidently lost my originals?
What if the guy here asked for OS3.9 would you send him a free copy?
If your answer is yes, then I have a long list of things I want you to send me, if it's legal as you say...
:-) See my point?
But I do see your point in -What I buy once belongs to me always- comment, and yes WB comes along with the Amiga Computer itself, but in my opinion you should backup your stuff before this kind of stuff happens...
-
I think if he owns an A1200 then he is entitled to a copy of WB3.0. Any other argument is just anally retentive. Anyway, we all know the law is an ass...
(In England, ass is a donkey, not something else!)

Im sure the workbench 3 manuel said you should always use backups of your workbench disks .
you could try http://www.amibench.com/ (http://www.amibench.com/)
you can place a want ad or view items for sale most of the time you can get stuff a lot cheaper than ebay.I gave a full set away with an a1200 wish i had kept it now . :-)
-
what amiga format cd,s was 3.0 on .?
What country are you from it might help if someone has got a legal set to send you or sell to you. :-)
-
@ LP
I don't have Amiga Quake, Napalm or OS 3.9 :-)
Seriously though, it's dangerous on a subject like this to say one thing and mean another. If people got the attitude as a result that companies are right to demand all kinds of things in their license agreements, the rights of the customer would go straight out the window (near pun not intended).
I agree with your later point, how would I know if this guy really lost the disks, and in the end I'd probably advise him to try and make face to face contact with someone who does have the WB3x disks so that he can provide proof of ownership. However, as everyone knows, there are plenty of sources on the web for workbench disks, so it would be much easier to get a copy from there.

OK, Kudos to whoosh777 & teotwin, after leaving the A1200 on for a few hours, and shaking the harddrive abit, it fires right up. After the Amiga fires up, I finally realized how long it has been (6 years!) *Sigh* I totally forgot all the commands (of course my manuals are no where to be found :P ). The first 2 things that I want to do is to re-create the workbeach disk and copy all the content to another harddrive. If anyone care to point me to any webpage, or just feeling generous to help me out I would be greatly appericated.
my email address is azdolt "at" yahoo "dot" com
I am in the San Francisco Bay Area in USA.
Thank you once again.
Alan.
P.S. the A1200 is the first computer I brought. :)
