Title: How many use Amiga for E-mail?
Post by: Tenacious on August 29, 2007, 07:43:46 PM
What software do you use?  How do you cope with newer non-Amiga (PDFs, Word, Excel, etc) file formats?  What account providers, like MyYahoo, work for you?

I use YAM, even gave it it's own partitin.  Seems to work well, especially with text and images.

My Yahoo account maintains a mode for older machines and works well with iBrowse.

Unfortunately, in my business, church, and social circles, I am the only Amiga user.  People are always sending PDFs, x.xls, and word docs.  Apdf does a decent job and I can usually find a way to view Word files.  I normally have to move Excel files to another platform to view them. Eeerrr!  Did any of the Amiga spreadsheet apps read or translate Excel files?

Is church really such a big part of your life that you need to differentiate it from "social circles"?

I use my miggy everyday for emails, it's generally a safer option than possible virus emails ;)

Apdf is good for the majority of pdfs, but some do need to be transferred, as do excel files. Pagestream opens the text from Word docs, but to see the graphics, you need to transfer to a PC.

I prefer not to use yahoo or hotmail, as I think a browser is for web pages, not emails., but IBrowse does allow me to read the odd hotmail email if I need to.

Believe it or not some people are heavily involved in their churches. I guess that's difficult to believe/understand in an age when Christianity and religion as a whole is scorned. It's actually quite sad that we've come to this state.

Have tried a few.
Microdot, Thor, YAM and Simplemail.
Mostly use YAM but some times use Simplemail.

SpamFryer works well with YAM but I can send emails from different accounts with Simplemail.

@ Wurzel

I love not worrying about opening some sinister attachment. There is a new clever strategy in e-mail subject lines: "I'm sorry we had a fight. See my e-card"  Then the mail is merely a link to click upon.  I'm not sure how the trap works, but I'm not going for it. Grin.

I guess no Amiga Apps open Excel files then?

I find Yahoo's e-mail less convenient to use than my own Yam. I simply appreciate that MyYahoo is every bit as usable on my ancient machine as it is on my wife's new one.  Many web sites and services take the attitude that "..only the latest standards on this site and users must upgrade or go without..".  Services that accomodate my preferences are somewhat deserving of my patronage, my humble philosophy.  Besides, I find them useful when traveling.

@ swift240 and others

I might try out Simplemail though I have no complaints with YAM after many years.

I hardly use my Amiga for e-mail. I have my own IMAP-server at home and IMAP-support on the Amiga is not up to scratch, making it hard to use my Amiga for mail. The moment this improves (whether it be through Simplemail or through YAM), I'll start using it on a more regular basis for reading & writing mail.

I'm using POP3 with YAM on my A3k at home for all private mail. PDF and Microsoft files are transfered to my PC for viewing.

Is IMAP *still* not supported by YAM?! Good grief, that was one of my main gripes with it when I still used it until a few years ago :\.

Doesn't TurboCalc open Excel files? Can't check now... but I guess M$ has invented dozen of new formats for xls after last update to TurboCalc :) But older versions could work.

For pdf I've used apdf and especially the MorphOS version of it works pretty well with most pdf files.

I guess there's many converters for Excel and Word files... I think there was free online web services for that purpose too. But it's really rare when I need to handle them, so I don't know better :)

For mail I use Pine on my mail server. Works always no matter what computer is in front of me :) Only thing I need is ssh and that I can get on every system :)

We use the e-mail account supplied by our ISP for my e-mail and as a general mailbox for important incoming mail and news letters.  My wife and son also have accounts on hotmail, etc.

In our case the most flexible solution is to use web browsers on all our machines, including my OS4 machine, to access the webmail tool available at our ISP homepage.  This way we can use any machine that is available, without the hastles and pitfalls.

Here is the rest of our story, to give a bit of insight as to why we came to this conclusion ...

At first, we were using two machines, a PC and an Amiga 2000HD. We used Netscape Mail on the PC, while I tinkered with various Amiga e-mail programs and home-brew scripts.

Since we already had a working solution on the PC, it was not a priority to get e-mail working on the Amiga.

I learned very quickly that it can become very tricky to manage e-mail if you are using more than one machine or more than one program to access the same account on a POP3 mail server, especially if both are set to download mail and delete the mail from the server.  Inevitably, you reach a point when you login with one machine and receive a reply to e-mails that originated on the other machine. The same thing can happen if you are testing more than one e-mail program on the same machine.

Now, we have three machines running Windows XP (a large tower, a mini tower and a laptop), as well as my OS4 machine.

On my OS4 machine, I have SimpleMail and YAM.  I have used both and I think they are both very nice programs.  I have not decided which one I like best.  SMTPpost and AmiPOP also run on OS4, so I have been experimenting with my home-brew e-mail scripts as well.

Ultimately, it comes back to the old questions about downloading e-mail from the POP3 server. Do I delete from the server or not?  What happens if I download a reply intended for one of the other members of the family and we can't read the attached documents on my machine?  The newsletters are another problem.  I can read pdf files but not word documents.

On the Windows XP machines, we use web browsers to access e-mail. We access our main e-mail account through a webmail link on our ISP home page. This is a very flexible solution for us, since it allows us to use any machine that is available.  I can also access the e-mail this way with my OS4 machine using AWeb or IBrowse.

In our case the most flexible solution for e-mail, is to use web browsers on all our machines, including the OS4 machine. This way we can use any machine that is available, and we don't have to maintain e-mail programs, folders or archives on any of the machines

I use only YAM on my Miggy. But just for amiga-related accounts (!) and mailing lists.

The other ones (the people who don't understand why Amiga is best), another web mail running on peecees.

 BTW: Apdf works great!:-D

Nope. YAM itself is quite nice, but the lack of IMAP-support is a major drawback.

Simplemail more or less supports IMAP, but it still is not as comfortable when using IMAP compared to similar e-mailprograms running on Linux or Windows.

This means I hardly use my Miggies to read/write mail. Which is a bummer, as email is a task my A1200 would be more than capable of.

I tried TurboCalc, which has an option for XLS.  No dice.  The xls file is probably newer.

Also, I found this converter on Aminet but haven't had a chance to try it.

I`m currently using SimpleMail, but has an annoying bug: each time you start it or you change folder, the first unread mail in que is marked as read.

I`ve been using YAM for years, but now I cannot send mails to yahoo SMTP...

I`ve tried the AmiNet utilities for PowerPoint & Excel but never managed to convert/display a single file!

@Tenacious

Oh, I guess it is possible ti view excel files on the amiga but you'll have to save the files in a "stoneage" format in MS WIN to be able to view it on the miggy.

I actually have MS Excel on my A1200 :-D

Have never tried to transfer some excel files back and forth but will try that as soon as I get around to it
