Title: Final decisions on display (for me)... svideo, vga, rgb
Post by: vic20owner on August 25, 2007, 09:52:18 PM
I spent some time on my 1084s so I would get a feel for stock configuration, using hires laced.  Flicker is annoying, and display looks ok, but a bit fuzzy.. you know I can see the monitor's dot pitch.  I can't even believe I tolerated this for 6 years on my original amigas.  No wonder I wear glasses now :(

So I tried productivity mode on my LCD.  Looks pretty good... some minor scaling issues but pretty good overall, but blocky.

Using other programs though is frustrating... some mode promote correctly, others (games) dont.

Next, I tried s-video using an s-video hack.  Here is where the games really shine. They look just great. As good as RGB on the 1084s, except full screen on a wide screen LCD. Very nice.  Workbench in hires lace flickers and is useable but is slightly worse than the 1084s.

Then the mail arrived and what do you know, my new external scan magic has arrived  :-D

So, I hooked it up and was immediately disgusted by the colors.  My AGA screens look uh well, bad.

But then, I rebooted in PAL hires lace, and turned off my AGA gradient backdrop..  WHOAH! No flicker at all! Rock solid.  Colors look great.

So I plugged it into a 19" CRT monitor.  WOW!  Yes there are still some color issues but they are acceptable.  The difference in clarity between the CRT and the LCD (scaling and lack of color blends) is huge.

Now I have to figure out where to set up this monster LCD.

I was under the impression that the external scan magic was ONLY a scan doubler. That is not the case.. it is a flicker fixer as well. After an hour of playing various games I did not notice any tearing of objects, but I did notice some washed out colors here and there.

No enough to make me not want to use it.  Besides, I can always use S-video if I really want the full color effect.

I am considering getting an s-video->vga switch box for displaying the full color games on the CRT. This would give me the best of both worlds... no flicker and good color for games.

just felt like sharing.

Oh, and I tried super hi-res laced and BAM it worked and it was actually readable!  First time thats ever happened to me.

If you're mostly playing games... there's very few games that use interlaced modes. You'd probably be better off with just a good RGB display, but whatever floats your boat.

I don't play games much. I am usually doing either C or Assembly programming so a clear steady display is important...

But I do like to fire them up occasionally just to see my Amiga do what it does best.
