Hi,
I recently purchased an internal DCE ScanMagic / FlickerMagic. It arrived yesterday and I installed it last night. The issue I have is that interlaced modes flicker like mad (non interlaced are fine).
The orientation of the adapter is installed according to the docs:
[RGBPORT]
10 Wire Cable VGA Cable
^
|
[LISA Adapter]
^
|
2 Wire Cable
^
|
[ALICE Adapter]
The chip adapter connections seem sound and the 2 wire adapter seem to be OK on both sides (haven't test with a multi-meter yet, but looks good).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

Which did you buy? The ScanMagic or the FlickerMagic? Does the board you clip on Alice have empty sockets?
Ifso, the flicker is normal. DCE sold two versions, one is merely a scandoubler, the other is also a flicker fixer.

Hi,
I'm not sure, the documentation says "ScanMagic / Flicker Magic". The board I clip onto the Alice chip consists of a chip bracket and two wires (which connect to the LISA adapter). I'm not sure what you mean by sockets?
It looks like the top most picture in this link:

also similar to:

Here is the ebay listing:

This was sold as a scan doubler and flicker fixer, so if its only the scan doubler, then I got ripped off...

how are you outputting the video? If it is through composite it won't fix that.

FLICKER MAGIC

Do you see the missing chips that Tahoe mentions.
-
The model with the external video connector is definetly scandoubler only, i have one.
I also have the two clip internal model that has the missing chips, that is the flickermagic, although the leaflet that comes with it says scanmagic/flickermagic.. so easy to get confused..
There is a third model which has the missing chips and is the two clip internal. I assume this is the scanmagic only.
I have not seen the third in person, only photo's.
I don't think you have been ripped off as such, just the seller misinformed.. no doubt you can re-sell on for a similar price as they are quite scarce anyway..

Looking at that picture; it's the ScanMagic. All this does is up the frequency from your signal from 15Khz to 31Khz, it will NOT remove any flicker. That means that the output you get is correct.
Seeing how much you paid for this one item, it is a bit at the high end...

Not strictly true, I've seen the external video connector on Flicker Magic boards.
-
I have a Flicker Magic which consists of two boards and a VGA output. Its this:
http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=453
The grey cable hanging out the back is the VGA connector. Its certainly a Flicker Magic and not just a Scan Magic.
In any case, the one you got on ebay has the 2 missing chips, so my guess is its a Scan Magic. Since the seller described it as a flicker fixer, either he bought it and never tried it and turned around and sold it without knowing what it is, or you got ripped off by a dishonest ebayer.

Hi! I'm the guy that sold the flicker magic in this instance. I was using it with a PAL High Res Laced mode without flicker on a Phillips monitor for years and it was fine! You can see it's the flicker fixer model from the extra chip adapter in the ebay listing picture can't you? as the scan doubler only has one adapter.
Someone please help clear this up! :-(
-
That isnt true. The extra chip adapter just gets HSYNC and VSYNC from the Alice chip.
The extra chip adapter is NOT an indication this is a flicker fixer.
-
If the photo on Ebay is the item purchased, then it does not have two buffering chips in the middle. Therefore it is a scandoubler, not flicker fixer.
-
ah ok I see. Oops I was wrong. Situation being rectified! end of topic

This has turned out to be a very informative thread...
Maybe we can bundle the info together and submit with some new photos to the bboah.??
-
I've updated the information on BBoAH (which was wrong anyhow)
-
@alexh
quite a bit of it could do with updating, im sure there are enough people on here that can supply some better photos than some of the olde ones on there..
Its a great resource.
is www.amiga-hardware.com not updated anymore do we have to goto http://amigahardware.mariomisic.de/index_e.html for the updated stuff?
thanks.

This thread is an excellent example of how important amiga.org is to Amiga users. I hate to think what we would do without it!
-
Are the external models (completely external) only a scan doubler, no flicker fixer?
-
BBoAH still has a photo of a Flicker Magic on the Scan Magic page:

I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone that may have future dealings with him, his level of honestly and willingness to sort out the issue was outstanding!
Once again I am amazed at this community, you all ROCK!
