Title: What type of SCSI CD ROM for A3000?
Post by: tonyyeb on August 21, 2007, 03:55:52 PM
Hi all

I'm after a SCSI CD ROM for internal install into my A3000. What type do I need? Anyone got an ebay/web link?

Thanks in advance

You can't fit a CD drive in the 3000 case, so you'll need an external unit.

But can i attach it to the internal SCSI cable and have the case off the computer? Otherwise can you link to an external one that will work - without any extra cables, config etc...  :-D

Personnally, I took the case of a dead external SCSI SyQuest 44/88 drive and put a Plextor 12x drive in its place.

Any external SCSI box for a 5.25" half height device will do nicely. Just rip the old drive out and put you CD-ROM drive in it...

Hi all

Still looking for some answers on this. What type of SCSI connector will fit the back of my A3000 to allow connection of a SCSI CDROM?

Can someone link to say an ebay auction or an internet shop so I know what to look for. Don't want to buy the wrong one obviously!

Thanks again

Back of the a3000 has a 25 pin scsi connector.

all you need to do is buy an external scsi box and a cdrom and make sure you get a scsi cable that has the scsi pin connector same as the box on one end and a 25 pin on the other end.

box similar to this ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CD-ROM-Drive-With-SCSI_W0QQitemZ200243635626QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200243635626&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1308)

the cable with this looks like 50 pin for box end and centronics type for computer end, so you would need to change it, probs a couple of pound from a computer shop.

this is probs the cable. ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/25-Pin-to-50-Pin-High-Desnity-SCSI-Cable-1-2M_W0QQitemZ120289882652QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120289882652&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318)

you would have to confirm with cdrom seller which connector is on the back of the drive.

hope this helps.

Any (I say any) 50 pin SCSI CD-ROM will be OK.

One already in an external case with the termination in place is a ready-made solution. Just need the right cable.

The A3000 offers a 25 pin DB25 female connector (looks like a parallel port). The other side of the cable must match the SCSI enclosure you buy.

Would it not be easier to get a Centronics to 25pin cable?

Thanks

its easier to change the cable completely. you cant get scsi extensions i dont think.
