Title: Help needed for installing Debian linux on A1-G3 XE
Post by: Controller on June 30, 2003, 08:39:31 AM
I have tried to install SuSE Linux on my A1, but I could not do that, so I am trying to install Debian instead. But every time I try to install Debian, I get the same fault when it is trying to install:

Failure trying to run:

chroot /target dpkg --force-depends --install
/var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.2.5-11.2_powerpc.deb

debootstrap exited with an error (return value 1)

I hope someone could help me, as I want to use my new Amiga as son as possible.

Tommy

Ask your dealer to put you on the devlist; there are a lot of experts on there who will be happy to help you out.

setenv ide_maxbus 2

(use 1 if you only use one ide bus)

setenv autostart
setenv bootdevice 0:1

(boot from partition 1 on device 0)

setenv bootcmd diskboot

Assuming you have an Radeon card

setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda2 video=radeon:1024x800-8@70  L2CR=0x80000000

saveenv
ide reset

Insert your linux debian CD

diskboot 500000 1:0

(boot from partition 0 on ide device 1)

If it still fails get another iso image from ross's debian site.
Cant remember the url but its something line
amigaonelinux.souceforge.net ???

You should have been put on the dev list by your dealer.

i got similar errors sometimes.

whats your configuration ( especially RAM )?

I used a cheap PC RAM module and i get a lot of errors like yours, then i changed it and the installation goes better ( I get the same error one or two times but debian installed at last ).

I never installed it at first time.

If you are using a new Radeon Card remember to update libc6 to get a Xwindow output.

Today I have a problem with Debian and I have to reinstall it.

I get a lot of errors like you and I remember one think.

go to the boot menu and in bootargs type ide=nodma at the end.

It solved all my problems.

then you can erase it when debian is fully installed.

Thanks for the advices,

Sadly none of them solved my problem. I have also tried to replace the ram with some I borrow from another A1 user. But the problem seems to be the same. I hope someone in the community can solve my problem.

If nothing else works get the board replaced. It does have a guarantee, and that is what it's for.

Does your ram have toshiba modules on it ?

How hot is it where you are ?

I assume you have dropped your FSB to 100Mhz.

Try and use a CDROM with a lower than x24 speed.

Burn a new ISO at a low speed if possible.

A few boards accidently shipped with the plastic protective layer beneath the cpu fan and the cpu still in place.
Remove the cpu fan if you feel confident and see if this plastic liner is present, if it is remove it as its acting like a sheet of insulation. If you dont feel upto checking ask your dealer if they checked.
