Title: ScreenMode Prefs - Display Mode
Post by: hamtronix on August 17, 2007, 06:16:22 PM
Hi -

Im using WB 3.1.

I have copied over some of the 'drivers' from storage/monitors into my devs/monitors to use to hopefully get my FF to go to a VGA monitor.

When I go into ScreenMode the only choices I have listed are NTSC:High Res / HR-L / Low Res / LR-L. No other monitor options show up.

I notice in the S-S there is some lines about VGAonly (which I have in Devs/Monitors) but it doesnt appear to do anything.

What do I need to do?

I did this :
Try the following:

Boot without startup-sequence. At the DOS prompt enter the following commands:

cd devs/monitors
rename #? :storage/monitors
cd :prefs/env-archive/sys
delete screenmode.prefs
delete overscan.prefs

Now wait for the HDD to finish its work and a few seconds more, then reboot.

You should now see the normal Workbench on your TV.

Open the Devs/Monitors drawer as well as the Storage/Monitors drawer. Drag the icons labelled Multiscan and VGAOnly to Devs/Monitors and reboot.

This did not give me any other options than what I had before (NTSC) ....

Any help?

Only Amiga models with the AGA chipset, or at least ECS can create other modes than the built-in. I.e. A1200, A4000, A3000, A600. But not A500(+) and A2000.

However, according to your first post, you already have a FlickerFixer. So NTSC Hires Interlaced 640x400 is the mode to choose. All other modes can be displayed without a FlickerFixer anyway. Choosing those already-flicker-fixed modes can damage the FlickerFixer. You won't get higher resolutions than that.

Bye,
Thomas

Drag PAL to Devs:monitors/ too. Don't use vgaonly with flickerfixers, nor DBL modes. Multiscan is not good, too (IIRC).

So wouldnt an ECS A2000 be able to access these modes? I think I have an ECS A2000...

This site listing video resolutions seems to indicate other choices as well: http://amiga.resource.cx/mod/a2000.html

Also, even if I could not use them should the options appear in ScreenMode or does the software actually do a hardware check of some kind and not show what is in devs/Monitors ??

ECS machine can use other modes than originals. So your ECS A2000 can do the trick.

But it isnt . So how do I go about fixin' that?

Unless the machine is lieing to me and it isnt an ECS.

Weren't some 2000s made with a chipset that weren't fully ECS? I'm not sure thats really the problem here though.

In my 2000 and 1200's Monitors directories, I just have NTSC, PAL, and Multiscan. If you copy over the Dbl ones or VGAOnly, things behave very strangely (at least they did for me).

I will clear out all the Monitors than those and see what happens. I am a little concerned that my system may say it is an ECS without it actually being so... Its a clever little bunny.

Yep. After removing the other drivers I now have the PAL resolutions too. No other resolutions appear though even though i have multiscan in the there. This shows that it is working OK. ShowConfig says I have an ECS system...
