Is it my impression or the Viper 1240's at 40mhz don't have cooler?! I've just been at powercomputings site, and in the photo the thing doesn't seem to have one! Can this be true? If I'd do that with my 040 @ 40mhz I could starti cooking on it and spare some natural gas 8-)

Vesalia (www.vesalia.de) has some images of a Viper 1240 board without any cooling - but I guess it's just to show the 040 CPU off (it IS beautiful, as is the 060).
An 040 without cooling would probably go bust long before the warranty runs out.
-
I guess so. But they say it fits the desktop so it has to be tight.
-
Sure, they claimed that my Apollo 1240 would fit in a desktop case, too. And it did. But then the keyboard and hard drive didn't fint :-)

LOL

Well, at least the blizzard fits if you leave the trapdoor open. I 'm still despeately after simms for mine... :-x :-D

zapping this old thread back to life:D need to find a picture of a Viper 040 with the CPU off. emailed vesalia as per this old thread in hopes they still have a pic but if anyone out here has one please send me a PM.

Huh? Keyboard and harddrive dont fit?
Neither even share the same space as apollo1240.
I use an apollo1240@40mhz as well, inside my a1200 case, along with a harddive.
Cant see how a person would have a problem making them fit, even if they tried.

@ fishy_fiz
LOL nothing to do with fitting the card in the case. Need the pic for an 040 to 060 upgrade.

I was responding to post #4, which explicitely claims it (apollo1240) doesnt fit with k/b and hdd installed.

My Blizzard 1240 comes with a cooler but i never try to fit it on a desktop a1200.

Hey fishy,

If the heatsink/fan is too tall on the Apollo (CPU facing upward), the keyboard indeed might not fit. No idea about the hdd though, obviously no clearance issue there. :P

there are some 1240 cards that uses latest 68040 version which are low power ( it doesn't need fan)

The Apollo 1240 had the CPU mounted facing upwards into the computer. The heatsink and fan on my card squeezed so tight against the keyboard I couldn't really fit the top lid back on.
Don't remember exactly about the hard drive, though. I was using a 3.5" slimline IDE at the time so that might have had something to do with it. IIRC the HDD power theif wired to the floppy drive risked getting in the way of the fan. Not a standard solution, I admit, so I guess I can't blame the Apollo designers for that one.

well my Viper 040 has a small/slim heat sink on the 040 as it does get very hot and there's lots of space above the keyboard to keep the case fully closed.
