Hey there, great forums. I stumbled across this site in a bid to learn and remember how to use the Amiga. Originally had a A500 Cartoon Classics, then switched to a A1200HD Desktop Dynamite. Switched the A1200HD to a Power Computing Power Tower then lost the whole thing!
A few years have past (six) and now I'm back. Right now trying out WinUAE on my Windows systems. Got my eye on a smart A1200 on ebay, so will hopefully buy that soon.
Just expect to see me asking lots of questions, some very obvious to some!
:-D

I got a 1200 on ebay at an alright price, but you may want to consider AmigaKit. Ive seen basic 1200s sell for insane prices on ebay... AmigaKit sells refurbished (or even new machines from old inventory) 1200s with optional add-ons like bigger drives, RAM boards, software, Compact Flash readers, etc. Much less hassle than ebay and without the artificially inflated prices as well!
I've never been happy with the results from UAE (WorkBench looks fine, many demos and games run strangely) though some people seem to love it.

$345 USD for a bare bones refurbished (used) A1200 from amikit seems pretty inflated to me. That's more than I paid 15 years ago, and it was brand new with manuals, software bundle, etc.
Although you are getting a warranty but still that's really high. $50 for a 4GB hard drive? Ouch.
Your best bet is to post to all of the forums... then go with someone who has a lot of posts and a good reputation.
I got my A1200 from another amiga fan for $150 USD with 68030 accelerator and everything, in the original box. Excellent condition too. Then recently I got a 1084s-D1 Monitor from another person on this forum... $40 no shipping required.
murple is right about the inflated prices... I've seen people trying to sell 1084s monitors for $150. You will not get a good price on ebay unless there is a soccer game during the auction end.

Hi ArcaneA500, nice to meet a fellow Mansfield resident here :-D
You have come to the right forum for help, but do be aware that Amiga stuff is rarer and more expensive than it was six years ago :-(
Good luck, and have a :pint:

$345??? You can get one from there for well under $200, I'm not sure what definition of "bare bones" you're using, but... $345 sounds like you're getting the whole deal with drives, software, RAM, etc.
$50 for a 4GB hard drive? Ouch.
Well if you go and buy a $50 4GB hard drive, you're a moron. Get on ebay and get one for 6 dollars. Just get the Amiga from there, buy your own hard drive and such.

Welcome ArcaneA500!

Thanks for the welcome all.
I won a nice A1200 on eBay last night. Comes with 1.35GB HD and 3.1 roms. Including postage, it came to £40 or so.
I think I'll give up with the emulations once I have this machine up and running.

BEST FIND EVER!!
I thought I had lost my Power Tower'd A1200HD as mentioned above... well guess what?! I've found it in the loft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a little dusty, so I'll give it a quick clean and take some pictures. After a quick look at the Miggy, there are some bits and pieces on it which I have no clue about (forgotten what they are), so maybe you guys can fill in the blanks once I put the pictures up?
/me very happy!
:-D
PS. I hope it still works.

Okay, I've worked out what most of the things are as I've been taking pictures of it. No.5 is a IDEFix'97 board I think. And No.6 goes to a kind of serial port which is at the back of the tower (but what is it?), however, I can't see where it goes on the motherboard.
The tower is looking a tad sorry for itself. I need to get a PSU in there and fire it up. I'll try the accelerator in my spare A1200 after work.

Why this kind of things never happen to me ?!
I hate you, lucky man !
When I lose something, you can tell it's lost... :-D
