Title: Going Tower!
Post by: sweetlilmre on August 12, 2007, 11:53:13 AM
Hi,

I have 2 A1200s (Blizzard 030's 32MB, 4GB CF Card, Mini-CD rom) but I would like to convert one into a tower.

I have just purchased Evillord68's BlizzardPPC DCE Card with 68060 and 603e 210 MHZ, Rev2. and 128MB Ram, so I am good on the accelerator front!

Here is my dilemma:

I live in South Africa, so there is no conceivable way of getting a custom tower here without excessive expense. I do visit the UK quite often, so I can get a mediator delivered to a friends house and pick it up when I am next over there, but what do I do on the casing front?

Also, apart from the mediator, what else do I need (I already have a PCKey adapter) ?

Your collective experience in this would be greatly appreciated as I've only been in the Amiga world for 2 months now  :-D

Thanks

On the tower case problem, your best bet would be the D-Box 1200 from Vesalia Computers here (http://www.vesalia.com).

Get it delivered to your friends house, collect both that and the mediator on your next trip to the UK and take back with you.

Not sure if the voltages and electric plugs between UK and SA are the same but there's always converters and/or new power supply  :-)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The problem is how the hell to lug a tower case back to SA!  :-? Normally I just pack everything tightly into my luggage, but I don't think a tower is going to fit.

Are there any options to customise a PC case for this purpose? I have looked on google, but not really found much.

Not really an issue since the case seems no bigger than a standard PC MIDI tower case so it's easy to carry as a second piece of luggage :)

Dimensions:
length 480 mm (18.9 in)
width 200 mm (7.9 in)
height 437 mm (17.2 in)
Weight: 7.5 kg (16.5 lb)

Besides, it's good exercise lol

Hmm I suppose as long as the weight limit is observed I could have this as a second piece of hold luggage...

I will have to investigate. This total Amiga fetish is starting to cost me a LOT of money  :-D

Only starting? Better hang onto your bank balance ... it's going to be a bumpy ride lol

Check the PM I sent you.  If you want to convert a PC tower instead you will need fabricate a new back panel from sheet metal.  The RF shielding can be used as a template for the purpose of the standard I/O and you can retain the tower's card slots to fix to new panel to ease some of the difficulty in getting everything lined up properly.
