Hi
I have an Amiga1200 with a 540MB 3.5" HD and I would like to swap the HD a 1GB CF flash card.
I've read this Amiga 1200 HD/40 Compact Flash Modification (http://alan2.rateliff.us/a1200flash/) and looked for the adapter at here (http://mach5products.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=cftoideSFF&Category_Code=CF) and the cable here (http://mach5products.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=44PIN2&Category_Code=CF).
However the price seems high compared to this (http://www.8starshop.com/product_info.php?cPath=30_33&products_id=94&language=en) and this (http://www.digitalera.co.uk/catalog/Compact_Flash_IDE_Adapters-53-1.html)
I would prefer to buy from Europe instead of USA due to additional fees.
What do you recommend me?
I'm have a normal Amiga 1200 IDE interface (not buffered) so I guess I'll not feel any substantial speed difference (maybe when writing, but I will not do this very often)
Would the cheaper adapter have any technology that avoid using the same "sectors" of the card?
I guess I could buy an adapter for 40pins (3.5" IDE) and then an 3.5" to 2.5" cable from amigakit.com ?

I got a 2.5" IDE -> CF adapter from a Hong Kong seller on Ebay, it worked out about £5-6 at most including postage. (The one I have is like this one (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Compact-Flash-CF-to-44Pin-LAPTOP-IDE-Hard-Drive-Adaptor_W0QQitemZ230157485696QQihZ013QQcategoryZ41993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).)
When I got my A4000 I bought some of the $1.99 ones you've linked to. I bought a set of 3 as it wasn't much more than the price of 1 - glad I did, as 2 of them were duff! I'd avoid them.
As for speed, I found the A1200 booted noticably faster - presumably because there's no spin-up time? It felt a bit faster in general use too, plus it was silent :-)

From the picture I see it have male pins like just any hd. Due to the geometry of it I cannot plug it directly to the amiga 1200 slot since it will be standing vertically so i'll need a cable to connect it to the Amiga (maybe that cable from amigakit.com?)
Thanks

Sorry, hadn't notices your hard disk was 3.5". You could always get a 3.5"->CF adapter, then just do a straight swap with your existing drive. (The cost is pretty much the same whether you go for the 2.5" or 3.5" adapter.)

@maffoo,
I was refering to the monting of the CF adapter + CF card into the Amiga 1200 IDE slot... I don't pretend to use my HD anymore (once transfered the contents to the CF, of course). So i'll still need a 2.5" cable to attach it to the Amiga I think.

If you get a 3.5"->CF adapter you can use the power connector and IDE cable for your existing hard drive (I'm assuming that's 44->40pin already)
If you go for a 44pin adapter you will need a 44pin-44pin cable from Amigakit.

Oh I see. Well, I would like a new cable, since my new 3.5"->2.5" is a bit of a mess. Thanks for the replies and the ebay link!

Finally I've got the 2.5" CF adapter for the ebay dude :) Its a long story involving the postal services and border control, but not the seller's fault.
I'm going to buy the 2.5" hard drive cable from www.amigakit.com but it's available in two lenghts that may interest me : 2cm and 5cm.
I think the 2cm would be enough. What do you guys recommend me? Is it too short? It doesn't seems.
