Title: 040/060
Post by: jeffimix on June 28, 2003, 03:31:25 PM
I'm wondering, I know the '040 is slower than an '060. But how significantly? The '060 cards are a pretty large price jump. I'm wondering how well both handle MPEGs/AVIs, and just general performance, I could care less about playing MP3s, I got a stereo.

The 060 can perform up to three (I think) instructions per clock cycle while the 040, AFAIK, can only do one.

My 68040@25 MHz does somewhere between 18-19 MIPS whilst my 68060@50 MHz does 66 MIPS.

So with some math you can see that the 68060 does significantly better.

For playing MPEG's/AVI's you'll notice a huge performance jump over an
040. If you have the chance, get the 060, you'll be better off.

When I had my A3000, I was running an 040/25 and a CyberVision64
(original) gfx card. It still was challenged playing mpeg's or avi's.

My friends 060 played them smoothly.

Ok, we've established the '060 is significantly faster (it's also significantly costlier though :P )

The audio in these movies goes at about 55KBps, video around 100, the resolution is usually a little under 360x240. 29 Frames/sec.

I can make them into any format I want on my computer (I believe) so lets assume they're all MPEG's...

What's the minimum processor spec to run these at say, 15-20 frames a second. Can 040s do it? Can 030s do it (I wish)? Can 060s do it?

How baout an '050 ;)

My challenge for people who have these systems (or can do the math) to help me out, since I'm trying to figure out how cheap I can be (I'm not exactly in the possesion of endless cash)

Hmm, by the time I do get an accelerator, I'll probably get a Picasso or Opalvision card (graphics cards) so throw that on the heap too. (Is an OCS amiga,...)

A bit off topic - you can play DivX on a 603e apparently.

If you can pick up a 2nd hand PPC accelerator for a reasonable price you might have some fun...

I should point out that the OpalVision cards dont have RTG drivers (e.g. cybergraphx or picasso96), so most amiga applications probably cant use it.
