Title: No CD-ROM Icon Appearing WB 3.1
Post by: hamtronix on August 01, 2007, 10:12:59 PM
OK. The saga continues...

Hardware:

A2000. GVP SCSI Controller. Yamaha CD/RW CDROM.

Software:

WB 3.1 . AsimCDFS 3

Story:

I wont get into to the whole thing. But I had gotten a bad diskette with AsimCDFS 3 on it. So I tried using DiskSalv to get the data. Which it seemed to do just fine. I made another disk and it seemed to install fine.

My CD0: appears correct when I use software to make sure its on the correct SCSI address, etc. It claims to be mounted. And I can see it in the AsimCDFS Preferences. But I get nop CDROM icon on WB. And when I have a disk in the CDROM (one I made only ISO 9660) it doesnt appear and I cant use CLI to get to it.

Any help?

Have you checked to make sure that the CD0 driver is in the System/Dev's drawer. If not it should be located in the Storage drawer.

Yep. AsimCDFS put the files into the appropriate places and I went back through and checked that they were put there.

IT has been years, but suggest you check the software. I do remember a "toggle" for do you want ICONS. I ran a BBS with 4 CD ROM changers, with AsimWare CDFS.   Ever see 28 CD's mounted?

Just try to reinstall it, make sure you select the right device also.

did that. didnt change anything. Could using DiskSalv have given me some corrupted files? If so, would it be OK to replace them with files from an older version?

One other thing, did you use novice setup when installing? there is a bug in installer if you use anything but novice setup.

What version is your gvpscsi.device? Older ones are kinda buggy, especially with removable media.

Just delete the Asimcdfs from user startup, delete the asim directory, then reinstall.

How would I go about finding that file and determining what version it is? I jsut looked over the SYS: and couldnt locate it. I thought it would be in DEVS: but no luck.

I just did a complete re-format and fresh install of WB 3.1 and just AsimCDFS3.5. It still appears to be OK (Its recognized, no errors, etc.) but I get no disk icon whether a CD is in or not. I checked the jumpers on my CDROM and they are correct...

Any new help?

No GVPSCISI.DEVICE existed in DEVS: Yet again, everything is fine except the ability to read CDROMs (so its kind of useless). I moved a file that was called GVPSCSI.AMHD from the floppy to DEVS: and renamed it GVPSCSI.DEVICE, it didnt do anything.

Would appreciate any more help. Im getting close to being at a loss...

Thanks! I was wondering where the heck it was.

It is version 4.5

Kickstart doesnt support booting from CDROM.

Delete whatever it was you copied to Devs:. Download and extract the GVP SCSI 4.15 BindDrivers driver from Ralph Babel's site (http://babel.org/amiga) and put it and any associated .info file in SYS:Expansion.

alexh is correct in that CD0 will never show up in the early boot menu.

I fear that if you use "bind drivers" you will loose the ability to boot from your hard drive.
Title: Re: No CD-ROM Icon Appearing WB 3.1
Post by: Matt_H on August 03, 2007, 04:42:32 PM
@ alexh

Hmmmm.... Well, the old 4.5 ROM driver would start the boot process and 4.15 wouldn't get kicked in until the startup-sequence hit BindDrivers. I don't know if that would cause a problem. I'll check a GVP manual later.

EDIT: Oops, yeah, right there on the site:
Quote
To use the BindDrivers driver, you have to disable the ROM driver first.

@ hamtronix

Looks like you'll need 4.15 in ROM. These have been popping up on eBay a lot lately. Keep your eyes peeled.

That seems like a downgrade, shouldnt 4.5 be better than 4.15?

Nope. Version numbers aren't decimals, it's ., so revision 15 is newer than revision 5.

Ahh, thats good to know.

Can anyone explain why the CDROM will show up fine and mounted in any program that polls it yet the system wont recognize a valid CD when its in the drive?

I can see the card polling the device as well every 3 seconds so it must be getting something from the hardware. It also yells at me at reboot if I disconnect the drive so it knows that the actual hardware exists. This is the most confusing thing for me. if it didnt see the drive at all that would be one thing but this is strange to me.

Try a little AmigaDOS trick: with a CD on the device, open a shell and type:

 "DiskChange CD0:"

Then quit the CLI. The Icon appears suddenly on WB screen?

Hmm, are you able to read the CD on another computer? And, have you tried putting any other CD in the drive, like music CDs or game CDs?

I had an opposite problem where WB 3.1 by itself wouldn't show a disc in the drive. Only after installing AsimCDFS did it show up. I remember this happening years ago on my GVP 030 combo board and it recently did it with my Tek060 board. And I had made sure all my settings in CD0: were correct.

Nope no icon.... thanks for the tip though, that may help later on.

Is there an alternative CD file system (preferably PD) that I can use to test the software side?

I am not tied to Asim , although it appears like a nice program. And I still would like an explanation about how it sees the drive but doesnt recognize CDs.

Also, the CD icon should be visible no matter if a CD is in or not correct? Or would it just pop up when media is inserted?

I can't say for your specific hardware configuration, hamtronix, but both A500 and A500+ can boot directly from CD if an A570 CD drive is fitted on the side expansion slot. The CD drive does include additional firmware though (essentially an A590 hard drive controller, I believe), so the Kickstart gets an upgrade at the same time.

@ hamtronix

If the problem is with gvpscsi.device, changing your CDFS probably won't help. I stopped using Asim many years ago, but I recently reinstalled it on a secondary machine and now I'm wondering why I ever got rid of it. Its direct access to files, audio tracks, and raw blocks are a unique all-in-one feature that I believe is worth holding onto.

That being said, AmiCDFS is a freeware alternative. See Aminet.

Try upgrading gvpscsi and Asim to the latest versions before you throw in the towel.

Oh there will be no towel throwing! I am not going to copy every thing over by floppy... And I got the amiga to cause me problems since my life is way to easy apparently...

So does anyone have or know of anyone that has the 4.15 ROM for GVP SCSI? I guess I should post on marketplace too.

Yes, Asim seems to be a very nice package so if its one of the best Id rather keep it. and I have the manual and serial numbers registration cards... are those good anymore? ;)

Unless they have gotten back into the Amiga market, no.

Another trick on OS3.1:
Open the hard drive toolbox and select the CD, assuming it shows there. Then exit the program. Does the icon appear?
In my case it did, prior to upgrading to the ROM update which addressed this issue.

Just tried this and not even my HD showed up in it. Nothing and all the buttons were ghosted. Any advice?

Thanks for all the help to everyone and please if anyone has any more I would love to hear it. You'd think there would be a way since the card can see it, and I will try anything at all to get it working.

Flashlab is probably suggesting this mate:-

Click once on your HDToolBox and then hold down the right mouse button and select Information... from the top of your Workbench screen.

Click on the 'Icon' tab and then change the line SCSI_DEVICE_NAME= trekmagic.device

to

SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device

Click on 'Save' and hopefully you will be able to see your hard drive and CDrom when you reactivate HDToolBox :-)

Now for the interesting part the CD drive appears as status unknown. no drive type information just the scsi ID and the LUN. does this clue anyone in on fixing the problem?

AmiCDFS/AmiCDROM, or even the built in 3.1 CD filesystem should be enough to test with.

Super Duper USA thanks to A4000 Mad! If my country invades yours you can always crash at my place!

In any case - after attempting everything to no avail I think it will be easier to assume the CDROM is bad and buy some alternatives to test it with. If anyone has a 50 pin SCSI CDROM they want to sell me please PMAIL otherwise it will be Ebay.

If that doesnt work I will attempt the GVP SCSI ROM 4.15 .

In the meantime if anyone has any new ideas kick them on down as I recently became unemployed so it is me and the Amiga for a bit.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped or read! The community is wonderful.

I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier, but try running GVP's mounting tool - it used to help me with diskchanges on an old SyQuest drive. I don't remember what it's called, but it's part of the standard GVP utility bundle. Mounter? GVPMounter? GVPSCSICtrl? Whatever it's called, it should bring up a big list of all the units on gvpscsi.device. Select your CD drive and hit the Mount button.

I always used a program called "find device" if remember correcty, it was included with ide fix long time ago.
Nice program, it will search devices and very important wich unit the cd rom or other device is on.

in the tooltypes of find device you'll have to set the device on gvpscsi.device or scsi.device etc (the one you want to have a search on) and it will display the unit where your cdrom drive is on.

Then go to the tooltypes of your CD0 driver in devs: and state:
device=gvpscsi.device
unit=0 (or 1 or 2 etc..)
donotwait

This always worked fine for me.

Spot on mate! I also sent him the excellent FindDevice from IDEFix97 and a CD0 set to 'gvpscsi.device' and Unit 1. The CDrom is found but he just isn't getting an icon for the inserted CD. Pity he doesn't have another CDrom to try in case the one he is using simply has a faulty lens or something.

What would this test?

Can some scsi device numbers appear to work but not work on the chain?

The CD drive is Device 1 my other device HD is 0 and the card is terminated at 7.

Right now im thinking the cheapest route is to get another SCSI cd rom to test it with and then failing that hunt down 4.15 ROMs.

Ive just scanned through the thread so sorry if its already been said but have you checked the icons for the CD drive? (Either in envarc: or on the CDFS's own folder), if these were the wrong type (ie: tool) then maybe an icon wont be displayed in disks that dont have a disk.info file.
(you would probably be able to cd cd0: into the drive though.)
Title: Re: No CD-ROM Icon Appearing WB 3.1
Post by: Matt_H on August 04, 2007, 03:30:40 PM
@ Oli_hd

That's a good idea - Asim does have a whole bunch of icons and related things it puts in ENVARC:. Since the original install disk was corrupt, those files might not have survived and their absence could be problematic.

Title: Re: No CD-ROM Icon Appearing WB 3.1
Post by: A4000_Mad on August 05, 2007, 01:49:04 PM
Well to try to look into this properly I've just put a 50 pin SCSI CDrom on an Oktagon SCSI card in an A4000 for the very first time

I then modified a Workbench 3.1 floppy disk adding 'CDFileSystem' to the L drawer and a CD0 in Devs/DOSDrivers set to 'oktagon.device' and Unit 1. When Booting into this floppy I get an icon on screen for a CD :-)

However, I do *not* get an icon for audio CD's. The CD's must have a 'Disk.info' file on them as with Amiga mag cover CD's, OS3.5 CD, OS3.9 CD, Amiga games CD's or CD32 games CD's etc. Most Amiga floppy disks have a 'Disk.info' file on them as well. This gives them their particular icon on screen mate.

@hamtronix

What CD's are you trying in your CDrom drive mate??

Also try the good suggestion in the post above. I get "CD0: No disk present" if an audio CD is inserted, and CD0: plus the name and capacity of a CD containing a 'Disk.info' file.

Oh.... and check you E-mail mate :-D

8-) Now you need to try a CD with a 'Disk.info' file on it mate. I've e-mailed you a 'Disk.info' file. Write it to a CD-R, finalise the disc and insert it into your CDrom drive.

Here is the update. I think I got it figured out (with a lot of help from everyone!)

In testing out yet more thinkgs from A4000 Mad I was finally giving up and took the disc out. I noticed that the on/disc light acted the same way when i took a disk out and closed it as it did when i put a disc in. It flashes green a couple of times and goes back to orange. So i listened to the drive. It didn't spin the disc all the way up just searched it. So I consulted my manual and found :

ON/DISC LED
This indicator lights up orange when the CRW is powered on, and lights up in green when the CRW contains a disc.

This confirms the final analysis that the actual drive is faulty...

Which is a shame as it is a nice drive. So, does anyone have any hints on how to fix a faulty drive? I figured it was worth just removing it and giving it a couple of good whacks. I have bid on a couple of replacement drives on ebay, but they arent nearly as nice as this one.

My friend had an old Mac 8100 sitting around. He gave it to me . I yanked out the CD , installed Asim and BAM! It worked like a charm. Now to yank out the Zip drive in it and also the HD. Might be some chips I can use too!

Is there a 4 pin CD Audio on the A2000 Motherboard to run my CD drive to?

Thanks again to everyone for their very nice help!
